  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

How does the i/lens data system work?

Hi there,
Just curious about how does this system work. Does the lenses have a kind of chip that reads the information in the optics or is the camera that reads that information? If that's it, anyone know how? Couldn't find tht info anywhere... sorry if it's something obvious, but I'm a kind of newbie in this technology.

The lens passes the data through a connection on the mount to the camera, it's similar to the Arri LDS system, but from my understanding has a slightly different pin out and I/O standard.

It's supposed to be passing lens setting metadata such as f-stop, zoom and focus settings for each frame. It can be quite useful for applications like visual effects. Here's some more info about it:

Has anyone actually gotten it to work on the RED yet? I wasn't sure it was fully enabled yet.

Yeah, just got my camera back from the upgrade and it works pretty cool on camera (showing Aperature, focus and focal length) but I don't think it's made it's way into the R3D yet or at least not in a way that I can pull it out.

Does anyone know how to pull it out of Red Alert or the proxies? Is it there yet?

Hey Noah!
Very useful information,thank you!
Certainly I couldn't have it working on my RED. Sure it shows the information, but it doesn't match any marks in the lens, at least in the focus distance and the T/stop. The only marks that seem accurate are the ones showing the zoom range.
Don't know what's going on and couldn't get any comment about if that's normal or there is a problem with my system in particular, so I'm trying to find how it works to see if I can get any idea about what's wrong...
Anyone else had these problem?

LDS/iPin

LDS/iPin

Can you use any other 4-pin LDS mounted lenses?
My R1'# is 1740, I'm waiting to swap audio-board/iPin/16G CF card reader.
Anyone tried new i/pin with Angemieux optimo, Cooke S4i or Zeiss' LDS system?
Please give me a detail information.

Thanks

There was a thread about this a while back. From what I can remember RED's i/ interface will work with the Cooke S4i, but not the Zeiss LDS system. Not sure about the Angenieux, but I would think not. I think they licensed the tech from Cooke. LDS pins are located in a different spot on the PL mount.

it seems like iPin's setting is all the same as other system, Arri's LDS accept Cooke S4i.
I read Cooke's information, but I don't understand. Is 1/0 data different to other system?

If anyone knows old thread, let me know.

Thanks

I have the same question. Any ideas on this matter?

Thanks!

Hi there!
I really had no problem displaying the /i data info on screen, my problem was it didn't match the marks in the lens in the T-stops and the focus, but was flawless in the zoom range...
Anyway, had to send my lens back so they could fix it but I can't give you more info 'cause I still haven't got it back.

(by the way, the mismatching data wasn't due to backfocus issues, just in case anyone wondered :) )
