  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

How does the CP 35/2.1 compare with their new CP superspeed 35/1.5.

The Zeiss CP2 35/2.1 has a well deserved reputation of being one of, if not the, best of that group. Does anyone here know how the new version, their 35/1.5, compare? Is it better? How does it perform wide open, and how does it compare at 2.1? It sure costs more, in both ZE or CP versions, but is it a step up?

No Mark, there was no original CP1 35/1.5, only 50 & 85. The 35/1.4 ZE/ZF is a relatively new lens, as is the superspeed 35. The 50 & 85 are the same as the originals.

I have new 35mm f1.4 ZE. It is the very sharp lens with great resolution. Fully open it is very sharp. It does have some chroma aberration fully open on some shots. It is a step up because it is stop faster and very very sharp at f1.4 or T1.5.
Hovever i am going to build my new Zeiss CP.2 set around t2.1. Zeiiss CP.2 T2.0 ....25,35,50makro,85,100makro and new 135 all at t2.1. Hope this helps. And i almost forgot. New 35mm does have very nice "bokeh" fully open. Not a bad full frame option.

Ah, didn't realise that. I'd read that all three superspeeds were all the same lenses de-restricted - that's what you get for listening to the internet I suppose! Thanks for the clarification Lenny.

The CP 50 1.5, CP.2 50 2.1, and CP SS 50 1.5 have all been based on the ZF 50/1.4
The CP 85 1.5, CP.2 85 2.1, and CP SS 85 1.5 have all been based on the ZF 85/1.4

The CP 35 2.1 and CP.2 35 2.1 were based on on the ZF 35/2
The CP SS 35 1.5 is based on the newer ZF 35/1.4

Related: The CP/CP.2 25 2.9 is based on the ZF 25/2.8, but there is now also a ZF 25/2 which could be used for a fourth CP SS (25 2.1) at some point.

that's what we said, but you got one thing wrong, if anything, they are based on the ZE versions, not ZF (CP's focus go the Cinema/ Canon direction). and based is not exactly the same, probably different coatings, plus they probably choose the best samples for the more expensive CP's.

No difference in coatings.

Lenny, lens housings aside the optical designs are the same. And truth be told, can be traced back to the optical designs Zeiss used for it's Contax line of lenses.

yes, i get it. same lenses. that is what we have been saying. but the 35/1.4 is a new lens. i had one for a few days but did not do any comparisons. i am interested to know two things.
1) how does it look at 1.4 (or !.5 in the case of the CP SS)? the 50 and 85 are a little softer wide open, milky i would call it. i was never a fan of them wide open.
2) at 2.0 (or 2.1 in the case of the Cps) how does it compare with the slower version (35/2-CP35/2.1) which is a stellar lens?

Contax 35mm f1.4, 9 elements / 8 groups
CP.2 35mm T2.1, 9 elements / 7 groups
CP.2 35mm T1.5, 11 elements / 9 groups

Thaose are good questions. I would be interested to know as well.
