  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

how does expert choose lens to shoot from 1ft wide to 2 feet wide at 10 feet with 4K?

check out the zacuto camera shootout, very informative. they do a rolling shutter test, towards the end i think... it would be well worth your time to watch it all the way through. http://www.zacuto.com/the-great-camera-shootout-2011

the a box is a very good solution, so is everything from wooden camera. as of right now, i'm not 100% sure phantom power is enabled on the scarlet, but it probably would be by the time you got one in hand (kinda like premiere pro working audio).

there are a lot of reasons why you would or would not want to separate your audio from your camera. basically, most people don't want to be tied between the two and prefer to keep them apart for better quality on both sides. however, if you're wanting to mount a mic (not as high quality results, typically) you'd probably rather record the audio in the camera, rather than syncing it up later.

yes, your sigma will work on the scarlet. the effective sensor size (and resolution) of the red at 4k is similar to that of canon rebels (aps-c), so what you see through the lens on your rebel will be darn close to what you see on the red at 4k. however, that particular lens may or may not be recognized (yet) by the mount for focus control. it probably (should) still be able to autofocus and adjust aperture, but i'm not 101% sure on that. to visualize, look through your digital rebel with that lens, the focal lengths will match up.

remember, when switching to other modes (like 3k and 2k) these are done with a crop to the sensor. i attempted to explain that here: http://reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?65973-Crop-Factor-Demystified and here's an even better collection of resources: http://reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?66210-Scarlet-X-Data-Sheet

hope you're feeling better. take a step back and breathe, always sleep on a big decision.

on a side note, debt is not a good thing unless it represents real potential wealth and a conservatively calculated risk/reward... but let's not get into politics tonight ;) all i'm saying is, there are more important things than cameras. consider those things first.
Paul - thanks for the kind advice. I'm downloading and will watch all three videos!

I've got a very large studio boom stand that the shotgun mike is mounted on. I was using lavs, but ... listened to a review that seemed to indicate the shotguns gave better sound (my ears are too old to tell probably). I use Izotope's RX2 denoiser to clean up the resulting sound a bit (so damn many fans and external noises! I was unprepared and didn't build an isolated sound stage, ha ha).

Knowing that I can use the Rebel to 'see' what I'd see with the Scarlet at 4K is a big help!!! I think I can figure out a lens decision using that 'technique'!

regards, Les

i know professional sound guys that use lavs. sometimes they're unavoidable, and usually that's in conjunction with a shotgun. in any case, i don't know a whole lot (or care) about the details of audio, unless it's music. otherwise, it just needs to sound good for me :) it's one area where i'd much rather rely on somebody that knows what they're doing, for professional practices. however, it never hurts to be well informed and equipped :)

Pcam app for iPhone.... boom.
