  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

How do you react when ........?

How do you react , when someone famous, or very famous , important in your business, someone you need to build a project with , someone who has the possibility to open you some access to some people project , world , investement, you really need, , but in fact this person is arrogant and treat you sometime like shit with no logical reason ?

Do you explode inside you and say nothing , because you dont want to fuck up the business , or get a bad reputation in the circus ?

Do you say to the person to fuck off no matter what ?

How do you react ?

Take it. Because, end of the day, it's just business. Tim Cook survived Steve Jobs and he is $400 Million richer now.

I personally don't tolerate bad behavior. I learned that if you let someone treat you like shit they'll always treat you like shit.
You don't have to tell him fuck off but you can respectfully tell him that you don't appreciate the way he treats you and you no longer want to work with him if he continues to treat you like that.
He'll respect you for it, even if he decides not to work with you. You wouldn't want to be working with him no matter how big the project is, if he doesn't respect you.
You're an artist first and a business man second. I always tell myself that everyday.
What kind of world we're living in if people don't respect artists.

Look to see if that person has a track record of making others around him/her great and successful - or if they are just sociopaths who are damaged goods and need to drain others of life force to satisfy some fucked up need.

I would have my kid be coached by Bobby Knight or employed by Jobs in a heartbeat. Tough, maybe crazy but produces solid citizens and success and what a war story the kid would have to tell.

I dont work well with people who don't have a good attitude towards me or my crew.. I love my job and see no reason to ever put myself in a situation that requires me to deal with a dickhead power freak.

I have no respect for people that act like they know it all and don't, I respect people that dont know it all and try... and get the job done.

When a crew member ever has to remind another crew member who they are, I also loose respect for them.. Aka "I'm the director!"

I never once in my life let any one treat me like shit... Other then my Step Father... Till I was 17th, then I left home never to return...

In business?

I tucked SHIT form no one, not ever, not even when I was just a Server...

Now? Oh well, now I don't even take SHIT form my self... ;)

Hehe- but that *never* happens in showbusiness (assuming we're not talking about brain surgery). Having a thick skin is definitely useful here...

The most open and honest person ever. I can't wait to see your 1st movie.

If you're getting paid enough to take the shit, take it. If not, don't. But I wouldn't recommend burning any bridges, especially if the other person has connections and you don't.

Exactly. I feel the same way. But, just try to be the better man - always.

The thing I do when I'm in that "burning bridges kinda mood" - I go and watch this video and then I feel MUCH better ;D

i can tolerate a crazy amount of bs, and if you don't believe me, hire me and try to gimme an earload lol:ihih:

if the money is worth it, whatever man, deal with it... if its about the money and you really can't work for whatever rate it is, don't. but never burn a bridge, no matter what the problem is, talk it out.

I say...make sure that this person is truly disrespecting you. What do I mean? Sometimes we might dislike working with someone and might take everything they say as an insult to us. Consult with someone who has seen some of the scenarios were you think this person is insulting to you. If this third person concurs...then break all ties. No one should allow themselves to be insulted, disrespected..what have you. At the end, never be a push over or allow anyone have you by the balls just because he can make you or break you. People will applaud you for standing up for yourself even in the face of career suicide.

Money comes and money goes. Every minute that ticks away is one I will never get back, so I spend my time on this planet carefully. I personally look to optimize every situation and have found that the only way I want to play is "win-win" with dignity, even if I choose to depart a project. There are ways to effectively communicate while not making someone else wrong. I once had a boss who managed by intimidation. One morning I walked up to him, looked him in the eye, pointed my finger his way and said " The weirdest thing happened to me this morning. A perfect stranger walked up to me and said 'you are acting like a complete asshole' ". I then turned and walked away saying nothing more. I got to look him in the eye, point my finger right at him, and say "you are acting like a complete asshole". Of course I made the whole story up with him in mind. I felt better, and funny enough, he let up on me.

I try not take life too seriously, cause I don't think I am getting out of it alive.

The best boss is a guy who dishes out criticism like jokes. As in, LA director to NY gaffer struggling to position a flag to perfection: "man, you're straight up electric, huh."

The worst boss is a guy who not-so-subtly hints that you're on "thin ice" because you did things normally, not the way he prefers them to be done, despite the fact that he never told you any different.

I've learned that I have a big mouth and don't know my place, generally leading to Bridge on the River Kwai type endings. So I generally say exactly what I'm thinking, unless I'm getting paid well enough to shut up and take the shit.

I terminated a shoot once mid way through the day because of a very rude client... and asked the AD agency and client to leave the building. With that they started screaming at me saying I'd never work again, that I was so unprofessional blah blah blah....

3 years later... the client was broke and bankrupt... the agency now know longer existed... I suspect there attitude reflected there future...

Walk away if you can.
There are always other opportunities out there...

If a director has to remind someone of his/her position, they're not doing a great job directing in the first place.

This isn't necessarily true Directors aren't the only big egos on set and people cast and crew of experience sometimes bring a lot of attitude with them to set if they see that you're not the most experienced or well known Director in the world.

If they treat you like shit they aren't deserving of your respect or your loyalty. But I also never take someone else's behavior as an excuse for my own. Someone once blatantly lied to me in order to get me to do a job and when I realized that I told them straight up. "I'm going to finish the day because I said I would do this, but don't bother calling again because this is the last time we'll ever work together again. " They thought I was just joking and laughed. I haven't returned calls since.

Mark is completely right. Long after clients are gone and forgotten you'll still have your own pride and reputation. Don't sacrifice it for someone who doesn't deserve it. When those sorts of people inevitably crash and burn being on their shit list will distinguish your character not tarnish it.
