  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

How Do YOU Make Money from Your Red?

Well I have no interest in making money from my camera/s. It is for me, for projects that I am working on. Some are purely artistic some are commercially viable assets. The only difference to renting a camera and owning one, is having it close to hand when I need it and more time to master the format, hone my skills.

I have masters degree in Film Producing and business management but I did that only to understand the nature of it, so I can get as little involved in the industry as possible. I just want to create. Food on the table, roof over head...that's pretty much all.

For me, RED paid for itself in the first 6 months I had it. I think the job that put it over the top into the black was a typical industrial video thing. And it's since helped me land a number of TV commercial and higher-end web promo gigs, usually as the director, often as the director/operator. Like the guy who started this thread, I usually end up doing a LOT and wearing several hats. I think that's how things are going.

Anthony -

I am relatively new to the area of professional video but, as you may be able to tell from my picture, I am not new to the work force or to the world of business. In the last couple of years, as I have transitioned my career from something of a marketing strategist to a writer/cinematographer/editor, I have dabbled in various ways to "monetize" my activity.

I love how Terry always uses Silicon Valley VC speak in most his posts! :yesnod:

I'm likely with Tim Hole in terms of making money from a RED camera (waiting for Epic/Scarlet) as my goal is to make films and not necessarily profit.

The thing is I'm an engineer, and unless I create the next Harry Potter, Romantic Moon Saga (Twilight) my day job will always pay me more (and more reliably) than being a full time Photographer/Filmmaker.

As for the comments about the cost increasing because of rising specs, that not all such a bad thing as it means the Scarlet will been even more capable. I don't plan to buy two of these things any time soon, so one needs to do as much as possible, and extra grand here or there isn't really going to matter on a +10 grand machine.

Chances are I'll do some wedding shoots and a few events (which I currently do with Photography) to pick up a few bucks here and there to help cover the cost of the camera. I may even rent out the camera to others to make some extra cash, but ideally I would want to work on the production (that is the point of getting the camera in the first place).

Working with TV series, features and shorts (mostly the two former for a while now...) + some teaching/workshops.

Used to work with commercials.
Found out that that takes time, too and wasn't really my reason for entering this.
Switched to the field I wanted to work with all along...
Couldn't have done without paying my dues first, though...

Shooting, + a lot of signalchain-planning and supervising from pre to post, & preparing files for different uses.

geeking a bit too much.
Actually get a bit of work from that, too...
