  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

How do you intend to use your RED ONE?

no dude you're right on the money. I'm TOTALLY for free speech and all, but this is ridiculous. This guy is clearly here to cause shit on behalf of someone. Unbelievable nonsense, hyperbole, and mis-information every single post. Seriously Jared, that he's still here is a joke.

EDIT: i see that others agree. i just read jaadgy's post and replied....

OK. I surrender. I see you need to all talk about this....  perhaps this will help...

I want to replace my HVX/M2/Nikon setup/ Do you guys think that I will regret not having the HVX for down and dirty jobs?

...possibly you might. We are also hanging on to all our "old" gear. After all 4K work with 4K workflow must have a price and customers who can not or don't want to afford it will get the old gear.

Also, we want to keep the camera "special" and not use it for absolutely everything. RED is our high end tool. But without the low end, where's the high end?

I just sold my hvx setup. Didn't want to but pragmatically speaking I think that post-nab the price of used hvx's is coming down quite a bit, so i'll pick up a used one then....although I'll try to use red for the down and dirty and see how that works out:wacko:

Chuckt, with all due respect dude, SHUT THE F#%*k UP!

I apologize to other Reduser members for my language, but that felt good:calm:

Jaadgy, with all due respect dude, SHUT THE F#%*k UP!

So, how does it feel being at the receiving end?

Dude, I work in the industry too, and chuck's right.

And certainly the religious cult attitude of RED's proselytes like you doesn't help the cause.

All i'm sayin is...you like the RED? Good for you. Go out and use it. Who's stopping ya?

But don't live in the fantasy that the industry is now converting to it. And don't insult people that voice that fact.

Although I suspect this is just wishful thinking, because this would only foment the delusion that RED is going to magically turn all these amateurs into filmmakers (I mean, the kind that actually gets theatrical release and get paid.)

You all look a little scary with your rantings. Dial it back a notch, will ya? It's unbecoming.

I'm in this forum to find more about this camera, but you guys are really turning me off.

if you knew the history of this board, you'd know that it's pretty civil here, but that response to chuckt has been a long time coming.
You're threatening to leave if we don't conform to your level in your first post, while simultaneously insulting a number of people on the board?
Don't let your writing hit you in the ass on the way out....

Dear Lurker... if you were to read the topic of this thread, read the initial responses and then read the response by ChuckT you might understand the response by some of the members.

If ChuckT or yourself wish to set the record straight, inform us what the world out there really thinks and how it ticks, please, start a thread, your own thread, where this can be disussed.

As for now and here, I would love to hear more from the people out there who is doing what with the camera (even if it is amateur work). But it simply isn't possible if people abuse threads for their own agenda.

My thread has been hijacked! I agree with miraclemonsters- let's just ignore this chuckt fellow and continue on with the discussion!

Chuckt vs fanboy bickering is ridiculous! Guys it's very simple business decision. If it make sense, buy it. if not don't buy it. For me it was no brainer.
We bought two. I am a director cameraman for TV commercial and we can not afford not to buy Red.
I predict in few years Jim will get Academy Award for his contribution to motion picture industry. He has changed the map in this industry and will keep changing. I am not a fanboy. Just not stupid.

Which acquisition formats are you replacing with RED?

Miracle monsters:
We are planning to spend 6 - 12 month to bring up to speed using Red. May be Scratch. I am not saying Red is answer to everything at this point. Once implemented Red will give us tremendous edge as we become turn key in house operation.

wha? I'm not "threatening to leave", I'm just saying the fanboy attitude is putting me off from scouting the camera.

"threatening to leave"... this is so funny... like this is the cool club with the cool kids... jeez, what are you, twelve? why would you care if someone is in the forum or not?

I guess it's true what I heard on the stage the other day..."the camera is OK, the problem is that it attracts so many nuts". No kidding, our post super was really right.

And to contribute to the topic of the OP, well, if we use it, it would be for a studio feature. Or maybe not. Who wants nutty amateurs on the set?

But don't take my word for it, originally Posted by David Mullen ASC:
It was the attitude of some of the posters here that frustrated him -- the "politics" he was referring to is the attitude of "you can't say anything negative because RED is not just a camera, it's a way of life and you're attacking our way of life so I'm going to undercut your status so people won't listen to you".

That's too much nonsense to deal with when all you want to do is test some cameras and decide which one to use.

Claudio did thank me privately for standing up for him but the truth is that a talented and successful cinematographer like him shouldn't have to fight to get some respect on this forum. In the long term, this site needs more people like him.

Yeah. But you guys keep pissing them off.

We expect to replace our Varicam as our primary camera system (we have Varicam and an HDX 900). We make multi-hour specials and series for cable and PBS. We just borrowed a Red from John Vallon (Perfectoptics) who was kind enough to let us shoot some tests for our lenses and workflow, and we were all pretty impressed. We have taken the footage both as 1080 rendered files and from the proxies in FCP and layed them on to HDcam tape (which is how we deliver) and it makes the Varicam seem a little pale in comparison on teh HD monitors. We are still experimenting with the footage and while the workflow is no where near as easy as the DVCproHD-Final Cut Pro-Kona 3 to HDcam deck, it seems doable and should improve. We have spent more on lenses than the camera costs, but still, the value is tremendous. The bottom line to us is that we make television and this looks to be a real step forward from the system we have been using. We put the camera on our Steadicam (where it performed well) and on a geared head with Cooke 25-250 as well as our primes. The footage looked great. (I avoid using superlatives that might piss somebody off.) And I wish people would stick to the point. I'm pretty interested in how other professionals in other markets are planning to use the camera.

Okay, that sounds like you threatening to leave to me....anyways, for what it's worth, I'm no fanboy, never have been, and I respect everyone's right to post what they want. Chuckt has made himself an exception with alot of people, which is why you see the reactions you read on this thread....once you look into the past of his posts, you'll see where it's coming from. And this isn't some cool club, just a group of diverse filmmakers from different backgrounds and parts of the world trying to do something, believing that Red is another piece in the puzzle.
I understand that there was an unfortunate situation with Claudio. I don't know how that evolved, but I think most people on this board aren't 'nuts', just passionate, and yup, some are zealots. I'm not a big fan of zealot anything, except peace and global sustainability.
Reduser might put some people off, especially if they're used to a more formalized interaction process online. Reduser people mostly know each other a little, and it can get pretty heated sometimes. But that's okay.
So anyways, look, if you have any questions fire away, as many people are more than willing to help point you to a thread, some with librarian like skill, as most topics regarding Red have been hammered to some conclusion or another with steel mallets. Welcome.

Peace

I'm hoping to use multiple REDs to shoot live concerts and stand-up comedy, replacing O/B crews I've used in the past. I do all editing in post anyway, even when using O/B, so I'm hoping to create a smooth process.

I will also use it for doc, commercials, music videos, and hopefully some small features.

Jim

We are using #791 ("Spike") for a feature-length romantic comedy this summer and several music videos right after that. We anticipate shooting one feature film per year for the next several years using the RED.

We just got the camera, but are just blown away with its quality. What an amazing machine!

We sold our HVX/Brevis set-up because 1) we needed the money, and 2) we were concerned that with the new Sony EX1 and the RED, HVX prices were bound to take a very serious tumble!

I've heard from another REDUser that Chuck-T is a New Zealander (whatever that has to do with it) who has got some beef with anything new from the U.S. that might actually gain momentum in the industry and be a decent alternative to film.

It seems the majority of his posts are critical towards RED even though RED is in it's infancy.

It's like going up to a child that's just beginning to walk and screaming at it "You're No Good! You're Useless! You'll Never Run!"

Why such negativity? As if ChuckT is the pulse and the voice of the entire industry.

Who are you Chuck?

Steven Soderbergh?
Dean Devlin?
Mark Neveldine or Brian Taylor?
Maybe you're Jon Farhat or Rodney Charters?

I mean you say:

I listen to the chat among professionals in the film industry. I do not sense any interest among them to use RED. . .Most of the fans of RED seems to be non-professionals. . . I have not seen a lot of use among producers of independent films

You listen to the chat?

What are you, a sales guy in the electronics department at The Warehouse or Dick Smith's in Dunedin, where there are like 2 professionals in the industry who spend most of their time filming the backsides of Sheep?

So, I guess according to you all the people involved in the above productions must not be "professionals" in the "Film Industry".
They're a bunch of non-professionals.

Who are these people you are listening to Chuck? Lets have some names so we can see if they are prominent enough people in the industry to really gaze into a crystal ball and determine who and who not is a professional and wether they're going to use this camera and technology in the future or not.

I'm not some fanboy, but you obviously have some issues with negativity.

OK!

Now I know who ChuckT is. I think. My dog makes people sit on the couch when they are stupid (read drunk) and won't let them up, (even when they really have to pee) untill I say it's ok. So even if your giving my first name a bad name ChuckT, you are welcomed to stop by.
