  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

How do I get Lens metadata from R3D for VFX

Hi I am looking to extract the lens metadata from R3D files so our CGI studio can use it for tracking info. How do I go about it as it does not show up in --printMeta option in Redline. Is it accessed differently or is it likely the metadata has not been recorded.

If you open an .r3d file in a hex editor, you can see quite a bit of the metadata (including serial number and type of media recorded to), so you might check to see if you can find the lens data that way.

I'd love to know how and when we could see this happen.

Because to my knowledge its only an initial polling of the lens info not the full lens info polled every 1/24th of a second which would be the trick for vfx in regards to zooms and pulling focus. I'd love to be corrected on this.

P.S. read all manuals that have been labled Beta with a grain of salt.

3K and 2K

3K and 2K

I'm curious about this information. It's gathering lens info, correct? FOV data. But if I shoot at 2K, 3K etc, wouldn't the FOV data from the lens' be incorrect at that point as I have effectivelly narrowed my FOV by windowing the sensor? The lens' wouldn't know what was going on with the Red, I wouldn't think. So, wouldn't this data only really be useful at 4K?

The data it is (or should be!!!) gathering is:
- focal length
- distance focussed
- aperture

I have never heard of the FOV being either monitored or recorded.

No, it won´t matter if you shoot 2,3 or 4K. The focal lenght doesn´t change, only the FOV changes because of the smaller used sensor are, but thats not part of the iData Protocol.
