  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

How did YOU afford your RED One?...

The biggest mistake that anyone can make is buying a RED or Epic because you just have to have one. It needs to make sense.....financial sense. I believe that there are two types of purchase, emotional and financial and emotional decisions rarely make financial sense. The RED has been one of the best purchases in my career and I look forward to owning Epic as well because I know that I can make it make financial sense. Owning this camera only makes sense if you can justify it, so be careful and buy when it makes sense for you. "Buy it and they will come" won't work for most, so use your head and make good decisions.

The auto industry is ripe for a technological revolution. Not that I see one coming soon, but you just know if someone working in their garage comes up with a new extremely efficient way to power cars and trucks, they will be a billionaire in about two weeks.

@Rob, we spoke a number of times on the phone last year and if you remember where I was living at the time you'll know that I'm with you on the people who have overpriced status symbols yet don't see the forest for the trees because their SUV is parked in the way!

It's encouraging to hear all the different ways people are achieving their goals. I have a whole new set of them as I restructure my life, and this thread is really helping me refocus and channel my thinking in a constructive way.

I do remember - I really enjoyed our chats.

Yes this trend is helpful, but knowing why is important then the how will eventually fall into place, thanks guys.

I lived in the happy land of art subsidies; that's over now because some idiots voted in a brown government, but I was just in time. I feel terribly lucky when I read stories of taking loans or saving for years; not that you don't have to work for art subsidies, but at least it's exactly the work you want to do. And for Epic: I bought a house 16 years ago that's worth more than twice as much now, and I'm living together with my wife in a rental house, so.......:w00t:

emotional decisions rarely make financial sense

Probably true, but unfortunately not the way I'm wired... I'm in the Gunleik school of thought on this!

I left my country of birth (South Africa) in my late 20's to marry my English wife... that was a particularly foolish financial decision, highly emotionally charged, yet in the long term has worked out great for us and with the added bonus that we now have 3 beautiful children.

Buying the RED was the same - it made no financial sense and examined on a clinical level, was a particularly ludicrous untertaking. I think most of us who set out to film a first feature are working on a highly emotional level of faith. We have no idea whether or not it will make any money or be accepted by audiences. But it's something we have to do, despite the risks. In any event, in my situation, I have been able to come up with some modest rental income and DOP work which sort of (only sort of) justify the purchase!

Somebody talked about Jim's faith and slog in getting RED out there. He might have had unlimited resources by our standards, but there were still the issues of going against an established industry, threat to credibility etc.

I think a lot of the worthwhile things in the world were achieved or done by NOT taking an accountants cold hard eye to every decision: By having a little faith and getting a little emotional about things.

some idiots voted in a brown government

Yeah, we had the same problem a few years back..... with the slight difference that nobody actually voted Brown in.... He saw it as his God given right and simply bullied his way into the party leadership, without bothering to trouble the electorate.... ; P

Hmmm, I assume the difference between a Brown and a brown goverment is clear right? (just in case: I meant brown shirted; the sort of government that thinks art is a leftist hobby that should be dealt with with as much resentment as possible)

As in Gordon Brown.... as a matter of fact, he wasn't so great for the arts either... ... but then again, neither are our latest lot either!

Both of the arguments extolled above (passion/emotion vs. rational/financial) are, of course, "correct." But I believe it is also true that genuine passion will get one through many a dark night (emotionally, at least) while lacking it just might bury you. (Not implying that those who make "rational" decisions can't also have passion.)

Personally, I know I live an awful lot in that "rational world," but admire and respect those that have the courage to dive in before they can see everything clearly. Funny thing is, we so often hear about the those courageous souls who followed their passion and succeeded. But we also must remember those who toiled in obscurity when their emotional satisfaction was their only reward.

Tough decisions. :001_unsure:

step 1.
get dressed good
step 2.
shave
step 3.
swallow your pride
step 4.
invest 20$ in good aftershave
step 5.
grab a taxi and go to the next HILTON
step 6.
order southern comfort with Ginger Ale-double
Step 7.
smile and wait in the lobby
step 8.
when a old rich lady smiles back go over there and say Hi Linda, i didnt expect you here
step 9.
keep the conversation alive, she knows she is not Linda- and invest another 20$ and invite her to a drink
step 10.
do what a man has to do

now you have a rich old girlfriend helping you out.
hehe

ha haha ha ha ha ha aha ha :001_tt2: thats just plain old evil. Now I see where my old land lay lost her $17,500, it was you right?:smilielol5:

Being one of the first 1,000 scammed people, I had The luxury of 2 years to plan how to get the funds (many sacrifices and taking advantage of a tragic incident that ended in a settlement), minus the $1,000 Jim and Co had taken from me two years before to vacationing all over the world. :sarcasm:

PS

Being part of the scam has paid the investment off many times...:emote_happyhappy:

hahaha "My sister is the number four best prostitute in all of Moldovia." that's brilliant...
Wonder what the number one earns

Generally a heck of a lot of saving since I realized I made the mistake of buying the Sony FX1,

Only cause I stumbled on the RED site years ago when it first launched and thought "never heard of this company" so was worried that I'd end up in a hole like I have done in the past with some purchases...obviously I was young and naive @ 16 so what to do.

Learned my mistake now on the RED wagon and passing on my FX1 to my sister

Still kicking myself for being an idiot and thinking "brands".

EDIT:
still freakin on how to afford the EPIC @ stage 3...
