  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

How did the RED Party go?

No not bending physiscs. Bending information theory though :-)

Graeme, you better start making room on your mantle for that Oscar... I think it's coming.. :sifone:

Graeme,

Great work. Moores law squared!

Is there a way to put this 1.3MB down a microwave link and reconform at the other end?

Magic Pixies Mark!

Why Pixies? Well, I was tech editing a book and pixels was mis-spelled as pixies, so that's where I got the idea for Magic Pixies from.

Graeme

I like your pixies Graeme, they have done us all quite well.

This was the highlight of the event to me.... I think a lot of people were reacting to the old reel as looking so nice and being cut very well after watching it, and then folks jaw's dropped when Ted said it was 10mbit/sec RED Ray... I know mine did....

The Red Party was great. So was the Vodoo lounge afterwards. I still don't remember how I got back to my hotel room.

Steve!! Great times there my friend. Are you going to post those pics or did you delete them already?

What form of codec? A clever one!

Graeme

Jim and Graeme.

Hmm, I had put forward a lot of 'Clever' codec ideas over in the projects at dvinfo (mostly deaf ears over there past the marble rattling around in their heads) which I know a few of you read, including a few ideas for this sort of compression, but had kept most of the good stuff too myself (like the visually lossless stuff etc, at these rates). Is this based on anything I am familiar with? I can guess this would not be a lossless version. In any case, you are welcome to give me a call, because there are some massive markets out there for this and I have corporate contact with a leading supplier. I have a major interest in seeing these things come through. I also do not wish to start my own codec project if there is already an usable alternative coming out.

One of the highlights of the party for me was watching the Angenieux guy's face scrunch up in incomprehension when he was told the price of the RPPs. I just happened to be in the projection tent with the Angenieux crew at the same time.

Why?

Why would they scrunch?
Angie does not make primes, at least not cine primes.

That's obvious! Angenieux is offering either a 30-80mm zoom T.2.8 or a 16-42mm zoom T.2.8 for around $21,000 each. Perhaps as low as $19,000.
That's a real game changer when you can buy a set of red primes and a 300mm for $23,000 - all at T.1.8
Conjecture suggested the red primes outperformed the Angenieux on the projector, but that is unconfirmed.

I think Jacek's point is that Angenieux makes high quality cine zooms. Primes are great, except when you are in a situation when you need a zoom, and that includes feature films. There are many DPs that opt for zooms based on the circumstances. Maybe they need to shoot quick, prefer the flexibility of not having to change out lenses all the time. All zooms are not made equal. Quality zooms cost a lot. Now the better argument is to compare the Angenieux zooms against the RED zooms. To me, that seems like a more worthwhile discussion.

Now, having said that, what RED is doing with their lenses is shaking up the industry. If you were at NAB, this was obvious. But, in all fairness these other companies have legitimate offerings as well and some shooters will go with more expensive lenses for many different reasons.

The great thing is there are many options now. Good time to be shooting.

It doesn't work this way

You are obviously not very familiar with production- Angie zooms are specialised tools for certain types of production and the two (primes and zooms) do not exclude each other but rather complement. They will be used together not one instead of the other-depending on the required shot..
