  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

how can I view raw in REDCINE X?

You cannot view "RAW"! It would be black and white, pixellated and very low-contrast…

You can, however, switch the color space to "Camera RGB", gamma to "Linear" and everything else to default. That will be as close as it gets.

please explain I dont undestand i think I'm always seeing it with metadata interpretation

Karim,

"RAW" as you see in the camera is impossible to see in Red software. RAW in the camera is a pure Rec709 (flat, withtout a gamma curve). Its more a tool them a accurate reference.

In the Red software, you can put the Color to Camera RGB and it will be without the color matrix and set the gamma to LINEAR to see "what" the sensor capture when recording, since its a 12 bit linear camera.

I guess its that, correct me if i'm wrong....

Nearly: the sensor is linear, not Rec 709. RAW means series of luminance values of single photocells – no color, no gamma correction, no interpolation of values of neighbouring cells with different filters. Nothing you'd like to watch…

I can still remember the raw images out of a Thompson Viper – bland and green.

RAW in the camera is a pure Rec709 (flat, withtout a gamma curve).

That is incorrect. RAW view in camera does have a gamma curve applied, otherwise it would not be viewable on a monitor. What it does not have is ISO, white balance, or other meta-data applied.

In the Red software, you can put the Color to Camera RGB and it will be without the color matrix and set the gamma to LINEAR to see "what" the sensor capture when recording, since its a 12 bit linear camera.

In REDcineX setting Camera RGB only disables one aspect of the matrix. You cannot defeat the white balance processing as you could in RED Alert and earlier versions of REDline. Choosing linear gamma is not particularly meaningful for viewing, and does not replicate what RAW view does in camera.

320 ISO, Camera RGB, 5000K, Rec709 gamma gets you close to RAW view but is not the same. I think a toggle in REDcineX which allowed you to view (not necessarily render) RAW in the same way the camera shows it would be a useful function.

And why red do not have Cineon Log C ? It is possible to have it on the Epic... ?
