How can I send work away for color grading?

Hey guys,

I have a buddy of mine who lives in America (i'm in Sydney, Australia), and I want him to do some color grading for me on a regular basis.

My problem is that I don't want to have to send a hard drive halfway around the world, or upload a few hundred GB (at least).

My thoughts are, can i export a screen shot in .red format, so that he can do a grade, save the settings in a project, then I can link it all back up when he sends it back to me?

I figured by exporting low res proxies wouldn't be half as effective as you lose all the raw capabilities.

Please correct me if i'm wrong, Is there an easier way for this to happen?

Tom

How long is the project?

If it's a spot (30-60 seconds) you can easily do R3D trims and FTP the footage.

If it's longer, your R3D still suggestion has some merit, but not much. You will lose the ability to watch the scenes, in motion, in the sequence, which is important to a colorist doing the best they can do.

You can set Resolve up to do remote grading, so you'll only have to ship the disk one way. That would be my recommendation.

If you really want them to grade your work, just ship the drive, and yes, setup remote grading through resolve if possible.

Shipping a drive (including the cost of the drive) won't cost significantly more than what the retail cost of a 94 min HDCAM-SR tape, which not that ling ago would have been the premiere format used for recording a master footage (never mind the cost of getting a dub done on top of that).

If it's worth your friends tine to grade the footage, and worth your time to have the footage graded by your friend, it's easily worth the DHL cost between Australia and the states. I say this as a person living in NZ, who faces similar difficulties of distance.

Thanks for the help guys, seems like there's a few options there for me.

If anyone else has other solutions, please let me know!

If you've locked down the edit, you could always send him redlogfilm in a prores hq codec... losing raw but still fairly flexible for grading ....

Not the ideal choice , but if money (or time ) is that tight, then this would save you some upload/download time .

Conform in Resolve, trim R3D, reconnect to trimmed R3Ds, export project, send it and trimmed R3Ds to your friend. He grades it and sends you back the finished Resolve project. Import project, reconnect R3Ds and render. Or if you both have a full Resolve version, then just do remote grading...

Resolve recently changed the name of the operation from Trim to Consolidate. And that means, that instead of simple file trimming Resolve now can consolidate the whole timeline, regardless of the material. So, if you have a mix of R3D, Prores, ARRI RAW etc, Resolve will trim and consolidate it all in one folder.
