  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

How are people overcoming the timecode issue on REDCINE with 29.97 shooting?

I'm just curious how other people are overcoming my problem that REDCINE does not seem to display the correct timecode when footage was shot with 29.97fps. Because of this, any workflow between FCP and REDCINE is not working well. Please remember this issue is with 29.97fps.

Am I missing anything in REDCINE to work with 29.97?

Anyways, by using Crimson Workflow, I was able to log and transfer footage shot with 29.97 frame rate, do the offline editing, save XML, match in Crimson and save telecine XML, locate the intermediates and apply telecine XML in REDCINE, do the first light color adjustments and render to QuickTime as separate files and up to here, all works even with 29.97 frame rate!

Ian is helping me to do the roundtrip and if this works, it would be great for TV commercial workflow for Japan!

You sound like you are having a similar problem to me. I have timecode from the r3d that runs consistantly through the whole process from FCP, Crimson and into Redcine. But out of redcine my dpx have a new timecode (one that is also present in the original r3d, but does not correlate to my logging, edit, anything else.) Also, I am running 25fps.
I'm sorry I can't help but i thought you might like to know you're not the only onem as I have asked for help with this issue and no-one else seems tohave come across this issue.

These are two separate issues.

Kaku Ito - yours is an easy one to fix. Just set the time base of the REDCINE project to 29.97fps *before* you bring in clips. Then, when you bring in clips, they will have a 29.97 TC base and the timecodes will match between FCP, REDCINE, and any DPX files you export from REDCINE.

DMax -To be clear, this is not a REDCINE problem! On set, they assigned a timecode to the files. This is the timecode that REDCINE respects. FCP does *not* respect that timecode but instead always uses time of day. So... the set assigned a particular timecode. REDCINE is respecting that timecode. Final Cut Pro is not. I agree that it's an issue, but fix the correct issue.

I hear ya Lucas. It is a slow and painful learning process. I see now how this is brought about. But it would be great if I could choose which timecode REDCINE would use at that stage. Or even at teh Crimson stage. I see that in Crimson it IS possible to do this if you use REDLINE. But what exactly is REDLINE, what does it do and where can I find it?

REDline is a utility operated by the command line (I think that means the terminal.) Crimson uses it to do its rendering.
So where do you see in Crimson that is IS possible to choose which timecode you want in the DPXs?

REDLINE has an option to use egdecode. Crimson isn't a red tool, is it?

Lucas,

Thanks very much, we were wondering why it does not change the timecode AFTER we were loading the clips and now we know why. We thought REDCINE must be able to work with 29.97 because when I applied the XML from Crimson then 29.97 was working, it's good to know to make sure that I set it before loading the clips! Thank you very much.
