  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

How about an "XLR Module"

Thanks Colin.

Base I/O=mini XLR... I see. After all of the bitching about those it is an interesting choice to use them again.

I wouldn't spend $1750 just to upgrade 1/8 to an equally useless mini XLR, even if it is in a better location. The power tap and all is nice though. I guess my choice would be clear; Pro I/O or a device like the MixPre. If you prefer BeachTek keep an eye out. I bet they'll have a compatible unit in under six months if they don't already.

Thanks again.

"What current close to $4500 or greater video camera [that shoots 3k RAW to conboard storage in an incredibly small package with high-quality optics included] DOESN'T have XLRs?"

There, I fixed that for ya.

Right, and most important to this discussion is that point of size. How much bigger would Scarlet have to be to accomodate those XLRs? Would you be happier to have your connectors at the expense of form factor, or can you be happy that Red has given you the OPTION? We are happy, aren't we? ;-)

As a B camera all it needs is a wee scratch mic. As a B camera, form factor is more important. If it were married to those ports, the Scarlet fixed would not be as flexible as a pro solution.

Base I/O

The main reason is mini-XLR connectors allow a physically smaller module.

And although its been said that it's not the preferred connector, they do work.

If I'm already adding modules then their relative size is not as important to me as having a standard or more common connector, but I have not had the benefit of handling a fully decked out system, so This is obviously speculation. I think I see the rationale at work; Offer the most options while producing the fewest modules. It's all good IMHO.

The more I think of it the base I/O is perfect for a crash cam. :-) Would it be possible to co-opt those mini-XLRs for different tasks via software?

I can understand the reasoning behind the Mini-XLRs, besides Red owners already have solutions for making them work, so it shouldn't be too large of a concern.

For the fixed scarlet especially, I think something from BeachTek or the MixPre is definitely the way to go. I would be looking for the fixed scarlet to replace my HVX, and having volume control knobs so that you can make snap changes to audio levels is pretty important.
