Hi All

I would like to find out as much as possible about how House Of Cards was shot - can anyone point me in the direction of some interviews with the DP's or other crew about the technical apects - especially lighting ?

thanks so much.

Can someone explain what is meant by secondary exposure here ? Does this mean HDRX ?

He used 6:1 compression (Fincher often opts for 5:1) because it allowed the use of secondary exposure, usually one stop under, which helped to achieve a more dramatic look

It seems to suggest that the show was shot with HDRx on throughout the show and you need 6:1 compression for 5K 2:1 23.97 fps. This is undoubtedly one of the best looking shows of TV. I would love to see it on Blu-Ray. Netflix streaming doesn't do any justice to the cinematic quality of this show. I hope once Red Ray is delivered then Netflix will give us a chance to see it in 4K.

Agreed. I also think that this is one of the best looking shows on tv (only it's not on tv really) and I think that the netfilx stream quality is far from great. The opening timelapse sequences of Washington DC were captured using Canon DSLRs (in still mode) and I must say they looked incredible.

Apparently they shot HDRx with one stop of highlight protection, which was especially useful in outdoor scenes. It looked very smooth most of the time.

From what I am told, one scene was shot HDRx.

'House of Cards' on iPad 3 ....

'House of Cards' on iPad 3 ....

I just watched the first seven episodes of 'HoC' on my iPad 3 this weekend ... have to say it was one of the most enjoyable "TV" experiences I've had in a long time ... we have a super duper 60 inch LCD TV with state-of-the-art sound system, etc, but my missus is not into political dramas so I thought I give the Netflix on iPad app a try out while she watched her movies.

The image quality even on the iPad 3 was stunning! ... and the new ears buds from Apple are incredible! ... I was only planning on watching the first two episodes directed by Fincher but I was quickly pulled into the storyline ... it was like quicksand ... the more I struggled against watching the whole of the show, the more I got sucked in ... be warned!

We all totally understand the need to record at 4K/5K ... Hollywood DI was one of the first post-houses to grade RED footage way back in the summer of 2006 and have graded a ton of RED features since then for theatrical distribution (I still have a frame or two of the Oakley watch shot somewhere on on our SAN) but I think Red User folks should also experience 'HoC' on an iPad if possible .... a lot more people are watching digital content on mobile devices than in 4k theaters .... a trend I believe will only continue.

The other interesting thing about 'HoC' is the new business model it's ushering in ... in the good old days, say 2010, this kind of high-producton value TV show would have been the sole domain of the HBOs of this world ... now we have an online streaming company commissioning high quality original content written by talented writers, directors and cinematographers and paying $3 million to $4 million per episode to produce the shows! ... that's on a par with what the three major dinosaur networks pay for prime-time episodic TV.

The point I'm making is that hi-res acquisition is great and all kudos to Jim and his team for having the foresight back in 2006 to push the 4K envelop ... but the future isn't just in 4k UHDTV and DCPs ... companies like Apple and Netflix are dramatically changing the distribution model and content consumption experience (and that, by the way, is where the real money is) ... so guys, get your EPICs and SCARLETs out and shoot all the best 5K images you can ... but just make sure it plays well on an iPad coming to a viewer near you.

If you haven't seen 'House of Cards' on an iPad, suggest you nip down to your local Apple store, plug in your new Apple ear buds, sit back and watch the future of TV unfold before your very eyes!

Cheers,
Neil

I agree - I watched it on my Retina iPad with Bose headphones and it was a really great viewing experience. Amazing times !
