  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hot off the presses...

Sorry to disagree with you guys but the mags should always be done on the camera because data integrity is the highest priority. This may change in the future but right now it's absolutely essential.

If you remove the profile files on the mag, then that tells the camera the mag hasn't been formatted so it's one way to let the camera know it needs to format the mag. Formatting on the pc/mac will also do that but the camera still needs to do the formatting to make sure it's done 100% the way it expects it.

So that's simply a technical reason. And that's exactly why we need a Mac/PC formatting tool from you guys. I'm talking about workflow here and the probability of data loss. You should keep that in mind too.

Just delete the log file

Just delete the log file

After successful offload of the digimag, the DIT just erases the log file, but leaves the R3D files on the mag. When the digimag is mounted the camera will think it is unformatted, so just reformat at that point. This way the footage stays on the digimag for as long as possible, more chances to detect a mistake and get the files before they are erased. The failsafe is if the camera assistant sees there are files on the digimag then s/he brings it back to the DIT to see what is up. I'm not sure why the DIT has to be the one formatting the digimags on the camera. Every AC I've showed it to picks it up right away and performs the task without any problems.

I think this way is best, and it is already working. Formatting on a computer is just asking for trouble in my opinion. Think of how many OS versions on the different platforms, etc.

First small batch going out today ( those customers have already been emailed )

2nd batch hopefully going out late next week.

So about those 16GB cards....Any idea when you will catch up on the backlog?

When the camera doesn't find the profile files on the mag it could also be due to a read/mag error. I just feel that it's wrong to format a mag in camera not really knowing what's on it. The Mac/PC is the only place you're really in control of the mag's contents.

Just my 5 cents...

whats the big deal with formatting on camera? it takes all of 15 seconds
and the camera sets up the card the way it should be.

A while back there was a discussion on whether the camera should have a function that would allow erasing specific files in-camera. Red was against it, as I understood because they were afraid that someone might accidentally delete files.

From that logic it does not make sense to have the ability to erase a full magazine (though I fully understand the technical reasoning behind it.)

In other words: I too would prefer leaving the formatting to the DIT's laptop.

Yes. That's EXACTLY why we insist on formatting on the camera. Data integrity always comes first. We can't trust the mac/pc is always going to format the way it should be. On the camera it's closed ecosystem and we have a known interaction between components.

The number of drives I've received for recovery from accidentally being formatted on pc/mac vs camera is about even so really, it can happen in both places accidentally just as easily.

This is really a no-brainer, folks. Always format within the host environment for best results. It's always best to do so, no matter what the device. DSLR, RED, Mac, PC, Edirol, you know the drift. Better safe than sorry!

The technical overrides the workflow. The workflow must always accommodate the technical. If it doesnt, the technical will bite you in the butt at the wrong moment.

We wrote R3D Data Manager to provide that download workflow and data integrity. In R3D Data Manager, there is an option to erase the files from the Red Media when all the copies were successful and verified. Then the ACs get a fresh mag with 0 files on it.

For "Manure" and "Stay Cool" - and for that matter every red show Ive been on - thats the mode of operation. Download the clips, verify the copies, and remove all the files on the source. If the camera dept mounts a drive that has clips on it and tries to format it, a confirmation dialog is displayed and the AC selects "NO" and the drive goes back to see what happened.

The drives should be empty when they are ready to be used, then formatted in camera with the cameras tools. Only then can you be assured that your data will be valid when you hit record.

We had a limited first production run of 16 GB CF CARDS that have all shipped. More coming soon....

Yup... presses are rolling. We are actually waiting more for the new CF modules to come in than the cards.. as you guys need upgraded modules to handle the speed of the new cards. Each camera gets one V2.0 CF module included at no charge on your first purchase of the 16gb cards.

The new modules of course work with the 8gb cards as well :)

Sounds great.

Is the v2.0 CF module something we have to send the camera back in to be fitted for? I'm guessing it is.

Also, how long is the buy a CF get a V.2 CF module deal running for?

no need to send the camera in.. it is the user replaceable card on the side of the camera just below the plate that says "RED" . Still only one slot, the card just has much higher In/Out speeds.
