  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hot off the presses...

Thank you Mark for the info and testing. Well done!

I have a dumb question for the red geniuses out there. Can these cards be hot swapped? Camera running (not in record), pull out a card - plug in a card, push record, keep shooting???

First small batch going out today ( those customers have already been emailed )

2nd batch hopefully going out late next week.

This must be a scam, for sure!

Yes, that is how it works. You just have to "eject" first. And in fact, you can "pre-fromat" a number of cards so you can just eject and insert and go -

With out wrappers or audio on a sustained shot to a 16gb card at:
4k 16:9 RC36 23.98 =
11 minutes 25 seconds

Wahoo! "1000 foot mags" - That was one of the major stumbling blocks (or at least point of argument) against adoption of Red.

Still, I find it disappointing that the 4K 2:1 max speed is still only 30FPS. Get us up to 50 or 60 and we have an Arri 535 killer.

I thought it was a mistake!

Thanks Mark. To understand, when you say eject, you mean go in to the menu and click eject rather than pulling the card out of the camera beforehand. Yes? After you click eject in the menu you then pull the card that has been recorded and put in the new card. Must the card be formatted before recording? Can you record on to a card that has not been formatted? Can the card be formatted with a laptop or does this have to be done in the camera? I am thinking about those times when things get crazy and we must shoot quickly, and we've shot all of the "pre-formatted" cards already. I know this is basic stuff but I am learning. Thanks for your help.

You can press Undo and Exit simultaneously to "eject" the card. That way you don't have to go into the menu. Push the two buttons and within a second or two, the media will unmount and it will show on your monitor that you don't have any media mounted. Pull the card and stick in a new one. Works the same with the 8GB CF cards, and essentially the same with the drives, too.

so if mine are not in this bunch and I ordered the next day after being available.....they sold a ton...man o manashevitz

Hi Francis,

The Undo-Exit combination is the fastest way to eject.

Cards need to be formatted to be used on the camera.
Best practice is to always format a card and never delete and record.
A format gives you a clean slate to record while deleting can lead to fragmentation.

You can't format on a laptop but formatting the cards during morning prep is one way to do it if you have enough cards for the day or until the next setup change.

Lastly, make sure your crew ALWAYS ejects a card properly waits till the camera says it's safe to remove.

Shouldn't it be possible to develop a tiny little app to format on a laptop? Maybe even integrated into the excellent R3DManager?
If any information is needed from the camera, why not have it read from the fist card formatted there and count on from it in such an app?

The cinematographers hate it when the DIT is constantly demanding access to the camera during setup for doing formatting…

I know you are constantly developing tiny little apps (and not so tiny ones), but maybe one day? Pretty please!

After alot of testing we determined that it was safer to always format on the camera. I would not recommend formatting off camera.

You can't format off camera anyway. (tricking a mag into thinking it's formatted doesn't count)

Deanan,

any chance of you guys writing a formatting utility for the mac or pc or putting that functionality into redcine or red alert ?

My opinion is that a mag should be formatted right after its contents have been copied reliably to some other media (multiple copies). And this is usually done by the DIT on a Mac or PC and not at the camera.

I think it's far too dangerous to have a workflow where the mags need to be formatted in camera. It could happen too easily that a mag without backup copies is formatted.

Therefore it would be really great to have a small drag-and-drop utility with command line support which formats a mag on a Mac/PC.
