  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hot Mirrors - Which Place Nicest with Epic X

Thank you for the feedback Vincent. This is like Pancro minus reflection issue. It becomes the number one choice definitely. Funny, people rarely mentioned this brand despite its quality is so good. This is what it should be.

Wow Herman. That look really good. Is it stackable ? Looks like completely new brand, never heard of this before. Thanks for sharing

Price is a bummer tho.

Edit : It seems that it is made in Japan.

Hi,
Yes they are made in japan, but I have them on stock in the Netherlands from next week.
They do not come cheap, but that is with most good things in life. :-)
Best, Herman

Is is very sad about Pancros and the ghosting issue. I tried them and had to send them back - they were by far the best neutral density filters i have ever used. Completely transparent.

So Schneider doesn't seem to have Hot Mirrors, they have a IR cut filter instead, whats the benefit / drawback to this approach?
The 'Truecut 750 IR' you can more or less compare with the Tiffen 'Hot Mirror' or Rosco 'TruColor IR Filter', which are IR reflecting filters which you can combine with Schneider Platinum or Tiffen Full Spectrum IRND's on the Red Epic / Scarlet. You can use normal ND's up to a ND 0.6. The problem with a separate Hot Mirror filter and IRND stacked to each other is 'ghosting', that's why having a combined filter solution works better.

The Pancros are indeed very neutral, but not always spot on at the Density site. Once I had a 0.9 which behaved more like a 0.6. I think you will really like the Mitomo TrueND's when it comes to neutral visible light spectrum representation. Take a look at this Japanese blog, which compared some IRND solutions on an Epic. A befriend cameraman (stacked some) TrueND's, tested them on ghosting and at the test result viewing we haven't seen them. At the same time the filters are spot on when it comes to light transmittance. At the moment TrueND's are my favorite (IR)ND solution.

IBCshow visitors who are interested in Mitomo True ND's, visit the True Lens Service booth 11.G65 in hall 11.

For those who weren't able to travel to Amsterdam, Band Pro is selling the filters through its worldwide network. We have a demo set of .3 ->1.5 in 4x5.65 available for evaluation.

1.8 and 2.1 are on the horizon as are 6x6 filters if needed. Yes the filters are not cheap in comparison, but great ND filters that reduce time in the seat doing corrections caused by color shift will save much more over the life of the filters in less time fixing it in post...

PM me if you would like to demo.

Sorry for digging up an old thread...

Just got new lenses, which require a new matte box, which require new filters... Yee haw. ($$$) Before I was shooting on Canon L Lenses and used screw in filters for everything. Now with the CN-Es I bought the Bright Tangerine Viv which supports 4 x 5.6 filters and a 138 screw in for pola...

HERE IS THE BIG QUESTION: Motion Mount and only need to buy 1/4 wave and Grad NDs, or stick with standard mount and get combination of IRND's to make it work?

What have been your guys experience? I know a lot has happened since this thread originally came out.

Thanks in advance for your advice.

DC

DC,
buy the Motion Mount only if you have the $$$ to buy the standard mount too...or only if you shoot in studio or daylight exterior mostly...the light loss is not ideal for low light stuff...
so I'd suggest standard PL mount + HMIRNDs...

DC, strong recommendation you check out MITOMO True ND for your filters. Major rental houses are picking these up... A lot of testing has been done and they are proving their value. Full disclosure Band zero sells these but they are phenomenal filters to maintain quality if image through the range of the ND. We should have some in our Burbank office available to test.

I just ordered a relatively inexpensive set of 4x5.65 ND filters from Skier to test out. I'll post once I get them.

If you work with Canon EF and try to keep it lightweight by not having a mattebox, are there any recommendations for cap/screw filters for ND?

They are indeed great filters that can be used as a replacement for both hot mirror and IR applications. I use them on Alexa primarily and they manage to avoid the wide color temperature shifts that plague traditional IR's. The downside are that they are quite expensive and also relatively delicate--the coating can be easily damaged and it takes a bit to clean fingerprints off them. But the advantages for me have proven to be significant.
