These are the guys that make RED conforming software, Monkey Extract. There are conditions on that $1/day rental. In other words, it's a promotional thing with some strings attached.

I don't really pay attention to rates anymore. I know what my comfort level is for renting out the camera. If that rate is too high for people, then the camera gets a day off or I'll go shoot some stock footage. Sadly, there are no rules, standards anymore. Talking to some veteran camera guys in my market, they used to have some standard rates they would all agree on for their betacam packages, so when a client shopped around they would get essentially the same answer on rates. Then it came down to availability and skill of operator. Also, previous working relationships could take precedence because rate wasn't a factor. It's a system that worked for them. Then again, at that time the industry was very busy so there was a lot of work to go around. Times are much tougher now, and the industry is cutthroat. So, one does what one needs to do to survive. The rest works itself out.
