$1600 for a red for an entire feature shoot....I just heard about this going down..

$76/day

wow I am glad I have 15 skills and don't need rentals for bread. geezzz

A fool and his money are soon parted.

haah funny you say good script....I just got done with 4 months of negotiations on a feature to find out all the group really wanted was 10% of the budget....in an account that we don't have ANY control over...what would YOU guys call that?

The real reason a lot of movies get made. :lipsrsealed:

I call that someone to dump from one's life.

I've done gear for free on shows where I am getting a full day rate. (the show provides insurance!)

I recently did audio gear for free on a picture I was doing sound on for friends.

(I also did a very low rate- again they are friends and I want to support them. If I didn't do a low rate, they would have been forced to make a silent film.)

So... the question isn't so much what the rental rate was, but rather what the total package was and the circumstances.

I will say I wouldn't let any camera body in the price range of RED One MX go out for that rate unless there was some countervailing factor. So, if that is what is happening here... next time keep the camera in its case!

just wait till the guys shit breaks, and has no money to fix it..

the reason we charge on average 850-1200 for a complete camera package per day is to afford the up-keep.

these ultra low ball rates just hurt the owner in the end

I've done 100% free gigs but they were for real friends, family members, etc. That's not the same as a commercial gig where you're undercutting someone else.

Yes Zak....the old saying of you get what you pay for...seems to fit ...

I'm not certain, but I think that was meant as a criticism of my business practice. Meh, I'm probably just feeling defensive.

In any case... all I really want to point out is that we don't know the whole picture. Maybe the RED went out dirt cheap, but its insured and the guy didn't budge on his day rate.

That's my whole point.

Obin, not as bad as here in China. Free Red Camera if you rent their lens. Lim

That may not be such a bad deal.

A lens package can easily cost many times a RED One. What its about $200000 USD for a set of Cooke 5i or Arri Master Primes right? $100000 for the new Leica's?

I can afford to give away rentals on the $25000 camera to get the rental on the $200000 lenses.

Of course that assumes some sanity in the market... if you use the naive formula of 100 days rental equaling the replacement cost of the gear... then the RED One MX is a $250/day rental, while the lens kits go for $1000 and up... way up. Especially if you rent out a big lens kit that includes a full set of primes and a few good zooms.

No point trying to judge the "right" or "wrong" in this situation. Like Alexander said, "...we don't know the whole picture".

One upon a time there was a budget and the times changed for the Low budget... now we are living in the NO BUDGET time. Take cover. :)
