Not sure if this has already been posted... my apologies if it has. Thought some of you might find this as awesome as I did. These guys sent a camera to the edge of the atmosphere and filmed the blackness of space! Pretty cool...

Weather balloons taking small HD cameras to space has been THE school science project here in the central and western US for the past year and a half. Tons of people doing it. Our local middle school did it last year.

The FAA does not require any permits or flight plan, or even notification, if your aircraft/spacecraft is under 3 lbs in total weight. I'm sure some of the setups being launched do weigh more than that...

As for RED and NASA. I've tried to get a RED camera more intimately involved with some aspects of the space program, for areas where I have connections. But haven't had any luck. I've been to Kennedy Space Center a couple times since RED has started shipping cameras and the last two times I was out there I saw RED cameras -- no idea who owns them. I inquired on my last trip when I stumbled across one and no one seemed to know specifics.

Jarred posted a picture here a while back from the Space Center of a RED One mounted up.

It would be cool to stick an Epic into the hands of the crew for the last couple Shuttle missions. But mission planning has been locked for the remaining launches and I doubt they're going to be adding or subtracting any equipment and tasks at this point. Even to swap out something similar to a large SLR camera.

I'm supposed to be shooting an Air Force launch this coming spring at the cape. Hopefully I'll have Epic in time. If for no other reason than a smaller equipment load to carry with me. :) Oh, and 5K of MX goodness at higher REDCODE rates.
