  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Holiday Update + IPP2 Preview Build

Anyone have a quick solution to this problem:
My regular Redcine-X displays fine on a 4K monitor.
This preview Redcine-X displays what looks like 1080p scale of the UI on the 4K monitor (annoying).

Looked all over windows 10 and can't find where to fix this. Can't remember how I got it to work on the full build of Redcine-X. ;(

Assuming you've scoped out preferences, etc. I'd try multiple reboots. Typical culprit is load order for drivers/displays/graphics libraries/etc. If that's a fail; double check which drivers were actually used (not just installed), you can surf for updates, do clean re-installs, make a cloned instance on a drive partition with a "fall back" OS version, etc.

Please send a bug report to RED with system logs.

Cheers - #19

Same here. Downgraded to previous firmware and black shading works fine. Upgraded to new firmware and calibration fails. Sent in log to support and opened ticket. Might be firmware problem.

Curious, how long did your black shades take before failing? I'm on weapon helium and I upgraded the firmware just now. It gave me the message that the calibration was out of date. Started blackshading and it's been going way longer than any other blackshade I've ever done. So far I believe it's been well over 35 almost 40 minutes. (while I know the window says it could take an hour or more, I've never seen it take that long.) Curious if people are just upgrading to the new firmware and not blackshading? Or if people are actually getting successful calibrations.

EDIT: Go figure, about 15 minutes after I posted this the calibration finished successfully. So far so good....

Love it my Epic-W just got real ;)

recorded a Prores file (RWG and Log3C10 in camera) then applied the IPP2 preview LUT in Premiere and to my untrained eye it looks great.
For lower budget shoots Prores is just a great option to have.

And for the people with black shade Problems I had the same first time around, restarted camera and it worked flawlessly afterwards. I hope everybody can upgrade it's defiantly worth it!
I also deleted all old blackshade profiles beforehand (apart from factory map), if that makes a difference...

So well done RED team and for the Raven I totally get it, in the end of the day the other option would be to
increase production capacity and increase prices for all other cameras.

Dear RED team,

Thanks for that. I definitely prefer RWG/3G10 to DC2/RG4, and before this update I had to shoot DC2/RG4 and then change all the metadata for every clip I wanted to edit. Now, not only can I shoot with the metadata I want, but after loading up my WEAPONs with LUTs, I can happily monitor beautiful color on my 7" Touch LCDs, which is great.

I have a suggestion: when monitoring with LUTs, what doesn't work is when I use the shortcut of touching the histogram in the main UI and then selecting RAW, I get RAW through the LUT, which is garbage. In my simple case, the desired result would be that RAW overrides my LUT and just shows me RAW, whatever that is. And I can see that it might be useful to some to have RAW going through their own LUT, but not the same LUT as their non-RAW video source. There are many ways to skin this cat (in terms of which options the UI presents and what overrides what when), but I'm just flagging the fact that as of right now the RAW function does not play well with LUT-enabled monitoring of the non-RAW video source.

So far I believe it's been well over 35 almost 40 minutes.

I'm not sure if you've done an Auto calibration before (where it calibrates for various shutter angles to self-manage), but that timeframe sounds correct. It's typically very long. The manual calibrations are the ones that only take a few minutes.

As someone who is just beginning to add LUTs into my post-workflow, I'd like to second this suggestion as well. I've been waiting for my number to be called on Weapon Helium, so I haven't tried any larger (33) LUTs in-cam yet - though I would also love if the RAW video source button I have set would show the uncontaminated sensor image as per how it has always been.

Yup. Calibration fails at the last tick of Capture 0.

Same problem ... I've tried different way to do it ... Powered the cam with RED ac adaptator ... no third party accessories attached to the camera ... And calibration always fails at the same time.

I guess this is just a little fix to add to the firmware. Anyway going back to 6.3.57 works fine ...

Can't wait to try this preview from the new color science !!!

Hats off and glass raised to Graeme and the team.

I'm so excited about the new color science. Can't wait for January to get here. I'm really keen to see if the new pipeline and color science will improve highlights. With HDR emerging, I would love to have more highlight detail and nicer roll off (Alexa still seems to have the edge in this area).

One question (sorry if it has already been answered): Footage shot on non-Helium can have the new color science applied in post. What about Helium footage with Dragon color science. If I'm shooting with that today I'm assuming that I can apply the new color science to this footage later in post?

What we have right now is a new color space, and you can use it in post even if you don't have a Helium camera. From what I've seen, it DOES improve highlights, and it's not limited to Helium footage... since it's a new color space and log curve. It's quite nice -- I re-graded a short I shot on a Dragon by switching to RWG + Log3G10, and though I didn't have time to get really creative with the grade, I found the initial results to be pretty pleasing with very little effort.

I'm confused as to what the firmware updates do for DSMC1 cameras (as the IPP2 stuff -- L3G10 and RWG -- isn't available in those cameras)?

I, too, have noticed more pleasing highlight handling with RWG/L3G10... and that's on MX footage (it's subtle, but substantial).

IPP2 and new color is great to finally have, but a huge THANK YOU for making RCX-Pro support HiDPI resolution scaling on Windows! It's wonderful to not have to use a magnifying glass to see the menus on my XPS 15! :drool5:
