  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hobbit Cam

It should be noted that the problems with NZ as the location were not Warner Bros. concerns. It was due to a pissing contest instigated by the Media and Entertainment Arts Alliance and the Screen Actors Guild. Both Australian entities representing actors... both organisations nearly cost our region the film. Stupid political grandstanding. I'm glad PJ told them where to stick it.

I absolutely agree. PJ and the NZ PM.

The movie's been announced as native 3d. PJ loves Red. We've seen an Epic screenshot that looked suspiciously like the NZ coast. We know Jim's jet was in NZ. Who knows how many RED employees were in NZ or still are supporting the production?

All we know is Epic debugging is going on right now. Even if we all don't have Epics in our hands by 30th December 2010 I'm sure PJ will have a bomb proof pair of Epics way before the Hobbit rolls.

Well if the film is in native 3d, we can rule out 35mm film. So I would guess that the film will be a mix of Red One MX and some prototype Epic thrown in. Sounds spectacular.

PJ's a fan of Red? That's a bit of an understatement. It might be easier if you don't think of him as a client/customer.

Once the Epics are operational I think they will dominate everything shot on 3d, so the odds are good for Hobbit going on Epics.

maybe im wrong, but to me, what camera PJ chooses on Hobbit will be something of a litmus test of just how much he likes Red. He's been so vocal since the beginning, but hasn't actually shot a full project on Red since 'Crossing the Line' and even came out and effectively said the original M chip wasn't to his standards.

This is a BIG, important project. As has been said earlier, I think the choice will be between film and Red. He likes Red. But in a $100's million production there a huge number of things to worry about. If you are not absolutely at ease with the camera tech, it's a distraction. Film is safe.

Social Network was a beautifully-finished film; that puts another chit in the Red corner. If The Hobbit is shot on Red -- Epic or R1 -- it will be a huge affirmation of the camera.

Here's hoping.

I am not sure if they shoot that fast, but pretty quick for sure! cast is set, they just nailed down New Zealand yesterday, but I bet there is a lot of set building and the like to go first. I would love to see Jackson's visual style within fantasy combined with Red on this. Very interested!

They've had the sets and props ready for months now. They're almost ready to go, and will most definitely be ready by February.

"Pirates of the Caribbean 4" won't be enough affirmation???

LOL! Yes, of course Pirates is an affirmation too. Can anyone (or any business) have too much affirmation?

I don't mean to suggest that The Hobbit legitimizes Red. We're well beyond that. (If there was any question at all, Fincher and Social Network took care of that.) But each new, major film that uses the camera re-affirms the camera as a significant tool for motion pictures.

I guess I'm still just a bit sensitive to the noise that we've heard about Red for so long from various quarters. Perhaps I should get beyond that...

From Jannard's Facebook page:

Jim Jannard
"Many of you may know that "The Social Network" (released a couple of weeks ago) was shot on the RED camera by David Fincher. David is now shooting "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" on RED. Steven Soderbergh is currently shooting "Contagion" on RED. There are several more significant movies about to start on RED... details soon as we can say. Did I mention that Pirates 4 3D is being shot on RED? :-)"

Take it as you will...

I am still putting my money on MX. What is more likely is some Epic footage sprinkled in but I doubt that the whole thing will be shot on Epic, that would be a big gamble. Make me eat my words Jim and Peter.

I wouldn't be surprised if Epic is working flawlessly already in a "reduced firmware" mode.

Thing is that RED sorta have to do the HDR trick @ release by now for a lot of reasons, not only marketing. Which probly is a trick in the "advanced" division when one starts to consider all the silly stuff people are going to do with it.

A whole set of producers happily screaming:
Gee, now I won't need NDs ever again... -:)

But if you consider "basic" to be R1-like features, I would be very surprised if Epic isn't already there +++ and have been for quite a while.
