  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

HMI pin configurations for various brands - is there a reference web page?

I'm curious if there is a definitive resource for pin configurations for various hmi manufacturers. Or is it more simple than I'm guessing? Did manufacturers make changes over the years or are, for instance, all Arri HMI's the same configuration regardless of age?

Strand, Mole, CMC/cinemills, Sunray and Desisti are all always the same? 9 pin?
LTM and Arri are always the same? 7 pin?

I have a Mole 4k par and an Arri ballast that requires a pigtail. But - if I buy a different ballast that is setup for Arri I guess the same pigtail will work? Or, if I buy a ballast setup for anything other than LTM/Arri will it have the right pin configuration for my Mole?

In other words - are there only two options? Arri/LTM or 'other'? Obviously I'm only talking about pin configuration - not wattage or diameter of the cables - just the pin compatibility.

Your best resource is the ballast manufacturer Power Gems. They will be able to give you a table of the pin out configurations of most manufacturers.

The pin out for manufacturers have been consistent over the years. For instance the pin out on an Arri 120O magnetic ballast is the same for the latest pfc electronic ballast. But, the pin out varies between power classes of the same manufacturer. For instance an Arri 575 has a different pin out than an Arri 1200. Not all the pins are used which is why the same head cable can be used for an Arri 575 as an Arri 1200 - they use different pins.

If I remember correctly, the three main configurations are Arri, LTM, and Strand. If my memory doesn't fail me, Mole conforms to the Strand standard.

Good advice from Paul. Arri specifies their pinout in the ballast´s manuals. You should be able to download it from here: http://www.arri.com/de/support/downloads/downloadsuche/
There also is a schematic that shows what pin referred to what connection in the lamp head. Might be the most versatile solution to just get a new VEAM connector and wire it for Arri. At least I did this the my Strand fresnel (which use the same IREM ignitor like Arri btw). To be on the safe side you might want to check the capacitors and add the varistor between L lo and L hi, any decent service center should be able to get this done for you.
