  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

History of the S35 Scarlet (and why it's now EPIC-S) from my perspective...

And of course, this is likely to result in MORE processing, not less. Leading one to believe that these downscaled images, even in the Epic, will come with the result of LOWER frame rates, not higher, as cropping the sensor would allow.

And thinking this through to the 3K Scarlet, it would not seem that you'd get higher frame rates than the 120 fps at 2K (if you can even shoot at 2K) since I very much doubt they would crop the sensor to get 2K. And, that is consistent with Joseph's suggestion that the in-cam downscaling to 1080p will reduce frame rates as well.

Good to know guys, I wasn't aware of the in-camera downscaling part -- good to know. Thx :)

So the first available camera with red-mount will be the Epic S?

I'm not familiar with a "Red-mount", but Epic-X will be the first camera off the assembly lines and will feature interchangeable mounts like the rest of the Epic and Scarlet lines.

The mount for the miniprimes (I believe it is called mini-PL?) would really only make sense to use on the Scarlet Interchangeable. Though, I suppose you could window down the sensor a lot on an Epic and use it that way...

Are mini-primes still a go?

We haven't heard details on these in a while. Nothing is saying they aren't, but I don't think we have gotten release date or pricing updates.

The mount for the "mini-primes" is actually a "MINI-RED Mount", I believe. The lenses (officially regarded as the "RED MINI Primes") were last projected at either $900 or $950 meaning the whole lineup coming under $5,000.

Nothing specific about release date but I can only imagine it being released hand in hand with the CINEMA Scarlet...

Ah, yep. I looked back and saw a mix of "REDmini mount" and "miniRED mount".

Yeah...I'm kind of banking on that. Literally.

And on 2nd look back, I see a "Mini-RED Mount" for 2/3" lenses and then a proper "RED Mount" for the larger brains being the "S35, FF35, and 645 lineup".

The RED Mount is very possibly the FF35 lenses from RED...

Good catch, Joseph. The closer we get to Scarlet and Epic, the more I start thinking about Monstro. What a company.

I was looking back over the old image of the scarlet line up

Looking at the image the S35 (now the Epic S) is the first camera to give the user access to the PL mount. Again looking at this image, the Fixed Scarlet has a TBA price. You could almost say that whatever the TBA price is the mini prime camera will be the TBA +$2,500, S35 TBA +$7,000 etc.

Seeing $6000 is thrown around a lot for the Fixed Scarlet, you could imagine that the Epic S (S35) could cost $13,000. Of course, using wild imagination indeed.

It is called the Mini-RED mount, but I thought that someone on the team mentioned at one point that it was based on the PL mount but shrunken down.

I can't remember when that was though. And since it's proprietary to RED it doesn't really matter anyway!
