If the ISO setting is just metadata, why does the histogram change with ISO changes? I thought the histogram is supposed to reflect the raw exposure independent of metadata adjustments?

This came up at December Reducation but I don't recall that we got an answer before class was over.

Thanks,
Adam

The histogram doesn't reflect the RAW; it's tied to RedColor. Toggle VIEW RAW to see a RAW-relevant histogram.

Thanks Keith. In available-light documentary situations, is there any disadvantage to just staying in RAW VIEW and ignoring ISO (assuming you're involved in post and can make sure the results are translated properly)? It seems like it would give you more accurate and immediate feedback on what the sensor is experiencing.

If it were up to me, and it didn't piss off monitor-watching clients, I would always leave the camera in RAW viewing mode, using the exposure tools to make sure I was within range in the shadows and the highlights. However, the advantage to shooting with a higher ISO, like 800, is that it represents an idea of what's possible in terms of exposure correction/grading in post and, if you keep your highlights protected at 800 you are definitely safe w/r/t the RAW. So viewing in RAW is "safest" but viewing in an ISO higher than 320 can be more useful because of the excellent latitude the MX sensor has below middle gray.

Thanks Keith. To be clear, I'm talking about the Epic, not Red One. Speaking of which, have you developed a preference for how far you're comfortable pushing the ISO on Epic?

I feel the same about the Epic (though I'm not sitting right next to one at this second, so I can't confirm the same histogram behavior 100%). For now we're still talking about the Mysterium-X chip, just with a lot more horsepower behind it. Personally I think the Epic looks great up to at least 1600 and pretty darned good at 2000. YMMV, of course, and it's all situationally dependent.
