Tonight I attended the Hillsong Church album recording and they were using Epics, Scarlets and Optimo zooms.

One epic at the back on a dolly, one epic on each side of the auditorium, another epic on the flyover boom, a scarlet in the crowd, and at least four epics or scarlets on some sort of steadycam rig moving through the audience. It was great!

Usually they use a few red ones, but this time red was everywhere!

I worked on a Hillsong project in Sydney a year or two ago that had 10+ Reds going. Results are amazing! Since then I think they standadized on them worldwide.

Agreed with what Gavin stated.

So the end result.... is shoot the production in 5K & sell it on Blue Ray to feed a village.

Don't get me wrong if you worked on the job no probs. But I find the rational behind this production "troubling". If as Jim stated this was a multi cam red event , is this an exercise in excess & for what purpose? Because there are better ways to feed a village or was this about feeding western ego's ?

Much of the profit from their albums is used to feed starving children, usually a village at a time.

Doesn't reflect well on us as human beings if it takes a 10 camera high-end music video to persuade us to help starving children. :P Which isn't to say I don't believe it isn't true. :(

Would we have bought less albums to help needy children if they had used Canon glass instead of an Optimo? Would that slight chromatic aberration caused someone to go "You know, I was really going to help those starving children indirectly by buying this music video, but that slight magenta fringe just really ruined the song for me."

I'm totally a hypocrite, a lot of my kit has been paid for from church rentals. I just am uncomfortable with the increasing media budgets of churches at the expense of real philanthropy.

People have been buying the albums for years because they like the music, but I doubt many people outside of this church know where the money is going

It actually costs significantly less to shoot Red in a multicam format than hire an O/B truck shooting glorious digi-beta. These churches have a MASSIVE following so the economies of scale are not what most people are used to.

I'm not affiliated nor attend the church but I applaud their desire to put quality products forward.
