  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

What is the highest obtainable frame per second number ? Even with lower quality, lower resolution or lower bitrate. Are there any plans for future software upgrades ?
Thank you

I don't think any future software upgrades will add features such as this. Probably just color science updates.

That's too bad. Higher fps should be useful for different reasons. For motion references and study, even lower quality would be good enough. I could buy a second camera, a cheap one for high fps only.
But if cheap cameras can have this I'm sure the Red hardware is more than capable for high fps. Especially with the newer fast ssd drives.

I think it's partly to do with the sensor, so it's not just about how fast the SSD's are, in fact I suspect that's a fairly minor factor.
Check out the new go pro black, I think that can do the kind of speeds you are after and in a tiny box too!

The quality is quite good with twixtor. I didn't expect that. Twixtor is quite useful.
But for my case I don't think it's good enough because I need to film some very fast changing numbers on a computer screen and then slow it down. And for other reference videos where the quality is not so important but time stretching accuracy is.

Nick.
I appreciate your efforts and really liked it.
Great clip man.

I would have thought that 120fps would be fast enough to catch the fast changing numbers on the computer screen. It depends on how fast the screen is able to update and I wouldn't have thought it could go as fast as the camera.

Now that you got me thinking, that's right. Since that screen has between 120 hz and 160 refresh rate, the 120 Red One fps should be almost enough. Thanks.
But probably I will still end up using a cheaper camera with faster frame rates.
Still faster frame rates wouldn't hurt on Red, even with lower resolution or lower bitrate. But you said the sensor is actually the limiting piece. In that case definitely we can't expect more fps with a firmware update.
