Hi RED Legends.

This is a simple question for the RED BOSS's and or the RED INSIDERS
A YES or NO will suffice.

I've just finished testing the PHANTOM HIGH SPEED HD data camera and am really thinking of purchasing one due to it's very clean 1080p 1000fps slow motion qualities, 12 bit depth data and exceptional image quality amongst other things.
It is an amazing camera system. (JUST LIKE RED)

NOW! before every jumps on the band wagon and tries to defend RED, DONT! I'm a RED purist, plain and simple. Nothing is going to change my opinion about RED. It's an awesome camera system, thats why I've bought so many of them. OK.

soooo....

Now my question is this, Before I hand over the GREEN to the PHANTOM salesman.
Can you (RED) answer this.

Are you guys making or supplying an upgrade to the RED ONE that will let us shoot to the same 2k resolution, (maybe 4k) 1000 fps and BIT depth as per the PHANTOM HD in the very near future. (like in the next 3 to 6 months)

Why because i'd rather keep my bucks with RED and stay as a one camera owner, not have different cameras littering the CAMERA truck and for obvious reasons, I want slow motion, 500 Fps will even do. Even if it's only 5 to 10 second bursts.
Why RED ONE upgrade and not EPIC, because if you haven't noticed, the World is slipping into a major economic melt down, An inexpensive upgrade to great frame rates will really make us love you guys even more and we will reward you with loyalty like never seen before.
Well from me anyway.

Please respond.

thank you guys. love your work by the way.

The Epic sensor will do 5K at 100fps. You can do the math from there.

The increased data rate will help get the most from every option.

Jim

Is that:
4k @ 200
2k @ 400

Would depend on how fast the sensor resets I guess (what one learns from here...) as RED ONE cannot go above 120 for that very reason...

Man your quick, I only just pressed submit! What time is it over there...

Not being rude, but is 1000 fps or 500 fps going to be consevalbe from RED ONE or EPIC in the near future like the Phantom can.
100 fps is good for 5k, but I'm really keen on 1000 fps at 4k, 3k or 2k like the PHANTOM can do.

And one very last question please if you don't mind.

Is there going to be a chip or upgrade very soon that will give our RED ONES that high speed superiority.
Due to the economic melt down going on at present and more than likely it staying with us all well into the future. There are a heap of us out there that are very very happy with the RED ONES and are not wanting to move onto EPIC for obvious reasons. (price) A chip or software upgrade will suffice.

The TV series and TV AD market has plummeted to a record low. I'm at the coal face of world TV production, We get serious amounts of high level work in that is to be honest embarrassing to talk about.
Over the last 6 months to a year, these projects have dropped to a record low of 15 to 20 % of what has been out there over the last decade.
This is true doom and gloom for our and your industry.

This is why I'm asking about HIGH SPEED upgrades that will keep our current REDS working into the future without any massive outlays.

Sorry to sound like a penny pitcher Big "J" but the future is not bright for our industry but I'm sure chip technology is.
If the PHANTOM people can get 1000 fps 2k, I'm sure you guys can kick there arse with at least this in your 2k mode.

thanks again.

I don't know if the Epic aspect ratio has been announced, but let's say it's 16:9. Assuming square pixels and 1k = 1024, that means the 5k frame is 5120 x 2880 pixels. I don't know if the speed limit is rows, columns or pixels but let's say pixels. So 5k @ 100 fps is 1.4746 billion pixels / second. If that's the limit, that implies:

5k: 5120 x 2880 14745600 pixels/frame 100 fps
4k: 4096 x 2304 9437184 pixels/frame 156 fps
2k: 2048 x 1152 2359296 pixels/frame 625 fps

----------------------------------------------
I don't work for red or have any inside info. If any of my assumptions are wrong, then the results are wrong also. If you need it in the next 3-6 months, I think your safe bet is to rent the Phantom.

I may have too for now...
Lets hope your math is correct.

Id still like a chip upgrade to my RED ONE's and not have to worry about and EPIC.

RED ONE -

4K = 30fps
2K = 120fps

RED EPIC -

5K = 100fps

2.5K = 400fps!!!!

If you are considering buying the Phantom, you are not on a budget... :-)

Actually the Red One can do max 60fps at 4k, there is just no solution yet to record that. At 2k the camera is using half the height of the sensor and thus can do twice the readout speed. My guess for Epic is somewhere around 250fps for 2k.

Good pick up.
I'm not on a budget, I'm one of the lucky ones, yet in the same breath I do want and need high speed and RED is my weapon of choice.

Like I said, Global Recession is closing in and for the first time in a long time, I'm trying to be a tight arse and was hoping you guys would be doing RED ONE high speed upgrades at the same time as EPIC.

I'll rent the PHANTOM if thats going to be the case.
Id rather give you my money since your loyalty to me in attending to my warranty work is so amazing, I'll show you loyalty by purchasing your products.

Just don't make me RENT these bloody PHANTOMS for to long please. RED is better right!

I think everything as it is gets turned upside-down next year...

Jim

Me thinks that the 5K 100fps limit has to do with bandwitdh/computer IO, not the sensor it self... but then again I might be wrong.... Heres to 1000fps 2K...

Jim, on my wishlist for higher frame rates would be that the camera scales rather than crops at the low resolutions and we can use the entire sensor, so at 2K we are still shooting full 35mm. Do you have any foresight to tell us whether this will be possible on Epic?

Thanks
Paul

Let me say this again... the clock speed of the sensor at full resolution is what it is. You cannot scale down and get faster frame rates. You can crop and get faster frame rates... but not scale. Physics...

Jim

So to get 1000fps at 2K on the Red, we need a faster scanning (and more light sensitive) CMOS + a built-in buffer then post transfering data to current recording media, id CF card & Red Raid?

Who ever said you were getting 1000fps out of a Red? Maybe people should just be happy for the fact that a year ago the same money wouldn't get you a clapped out S16 camera.

The insatiable greed and sense of entitlement on this site is often incredible.

I'm stoked just to hear that we will have 100fps at 5K and possibly 500fps at 2K. I would be interested to know if some of these new sensor specs would be available in the sensor upgrade for the Red One or if they would just be limited to Epic.
