Hey crew!

I was lucky enough to get a media pass for the upcoming K-State vs. OSU game next weekend! To say I'm excited especially with their quarterback being the frontrunner for the heisman would be an understatement. What I am wondering is about flicker in high frame rates. ANyone with some experience with this in a high end stadium like the one I will be in? Thanks so much for the help guys!

Matt

You should be fine in 60-cycle windows up to 120 fps (40 fps, 60 fps, 120 fps)
After that I am certain you will see flicker.
Please report back though!
Cheers,
Harry

Thanks Harry! I was hoping to be able to do at least 120!

I shot the UT vs FL game earlier this fall and up to 120fps I was fine. Over that, I got flicker, but it wasn't super annoying. We shot stuff at 1k/360fps and it's so beautifully slow that you just ignore the flicker.

was exposing the shot at that framerate an issue at all or are the stadium lights plenty bright?

In my experience (Europe) at least I´ve always seen the flicker on the monitor, so it´s just a matter of trying out frame rates right at the stadium. PAL land usually is ok up to 100fps.
You can check out the new tool on red.com that will tell you what shutter to shoot depending on the frame rate (to avoid flickr)
It´s under LEARN-TOOLS

Are you talking about the flicker with tungsten lights?

It will not be tungsten lights in a modern stadium. It will be some kind of discharge light (sodium vapor, mercury vapor, metal halide, etc.) They are all tied to the standard cycle of the country (60 hertz in the USA) and will flicker if filmed outside the "safe windows" of FPS and shutter combinations.
Cheers,
Harry
