  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

High capacity Redvolts

mmm, pretty myopic one size fits all point of view, the antithesis of the Red mantra...

Let me be clear - why do people insist on them for long-runtime use? It's great that they exist, don't get me wrong, but it's funny to me that people are running, say, 15 batteries and 4-6 chargers on set where they can use a couple of red bricks and get more run time...

Like I said, I'd like an hour runtime, realistically I'm not going to run the camera for 3hrs straight! 512 or not! An hour run time in a small package, EPIC no pun....

Jarred already said it's highly unlikely that you'll see an hour run time. MAYBE 45 minutes.

If you want a 1hr run time, go for REDVOLT XL in a battery module or AB/V-Mount battery.

I never caught this, had the brick batt deal didn't like it! I've got a quad, just love the small package. I do like the anton battery size???
An hour seems ideal. Just me though...

I would not like being your AC... That doesn't annoy you having to use so many chargers and batteries?

Honestly with all the chargers in a case, running the batteries 4 at a time it isn't much different than using bricks, and I can take the quad module off and go super compact. I love only having to worry about 1 battery type:)

It only takes about 2 hours to fully charge when they're completely spent. Same time as the Quad charger. Put 4-5 travel chargers on a power strip and you've got a DIY 4 or 5-bank charger. I've been getting 30-35 minutes shooting 5k at 24fps. It only takes about 2-3 minutes for them to cool down after they come off the camera. But you don't have to wait if you don't want. You can put them on a charger right off the camera and the charger will blink red and green until they cool down. Then after a couple minutes when they cool down, the charger will start charging them and it'll blink orange.

Loving the ability to strip the Epic down to the LCD, lens and side handle. I put that set up in a bag, hopped on the Metrolink and shot without anyone bothering me. The ticket guy even waited until I stopped shooting before asking me if I had a ticket. The cops at Union station in LA just watched me film without saying anything. Wouldn't have been as easy with bricks or as low profile. In other situations when low weight/profile isn't a concern, I put 4 in the quad mod and I'm good for 2 + hours and can hot swap. Redvolts give you more versatility. I was skeptical too before deciding to go the redvolt route but I haven't had one problem with them since last October.

Things will only get better as power management gets implemented and the +1 Monitor adaptor comes out that will have an auxiliary power out port.

Yeah, well none of my travel chargers automatically charge after they cool on the charger. I or the AC has to wait at least 10 minutes then take them off then put them back on the charger to start the charging process. I never get 2-3 minutes of cool down time unless I'm shooting in a freezer. Yes they give you the DSLR advantage but other then that they have too many problems. I do like having a REDvolt in the side handle to hot swap bricks, but even that is a hit or a miss. Maybe my camera doesn't like REDvolts

I see your super compact point, but that's something I rarely do, and usually keep my rig fully built unless it needs to be super compact.

I do love the quad and Redvolts. Please send your unused Redvolts to me, and I won't even charge you for the convenience and lift of anxiety you will feel after giving them to me. :)

But more seriously, I shoot a lot of hand held, and I've grown to love the quad. On set, we don't use em at all, which makes sense. But personally I have no interest in running bricks while shooting lots of hand held work. Also not a fan of belt clips, because of the cable snagging issues.

All I can say is that hasn't been my experience. 2-3 minutes and the redvolts are cooled down enough to start charging. I've had 10 redvolts and 4 chargers since last October and not one problem. I've read about other people having them go dead or not taking a charge shortly after buying them but zero problems here. Maybe I'm just lucky. Like anything, one size does not fit all. People should get what works for them. I like the versatility, with 10 redvolts, 4 charges and the quad module, I can go all day without having to power down. When I want to go small, I go side handle only. With the bricks you don't have that option. But if you don't need to go small, bricks are better.

The dual module seems to be the best size vs power solution; it'd offer 1hour (1.5 with SH) and hot swapping to shoot all day. I kind of wish they were cheaper, as it's difficult to justify 3hour bricks for the same price as 1.5hour RVXLs (PLUS ~$1500-2000 RV modules and $300 module adapters...) Even if the batteries were just double the price, that'd be fine (since you're paying for size), but the modules/adapters kind of kill my buzz in terms of affordability...
