  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hi redusers!

Quick question about mastering our project in HFR 60 frames per second or 59.94 frames per second. Below I will elaborate a bit on our project.

For a videowall installation we're combining 168 LED Panels to display a video with a total resolution of 3840(width)x6480(height). We'll master in H265@60fps.
The HFR presentation will guarantee a judder free presentation to the audience, who'll be standing very close to the videowall. Thus minimizing motion artifacts.

The videowall uses LG WS50 Display Panels. Playing at 60hz.

We're combining 5k and 4k Red Epic footage with lots of animation. Most of the footage is shot with a 59.94 fps timebase. But some footage is shot with a 25 fps timebase.

For our post-production workflow I was wondering if I should interpret all 25fps footage to match the 59.94 fps shots, and master in that frame-rate?
Or should I go for a true 60 frames per second master? Interpreting both the 25 and 59.94 fps shots to 60 fps.

Since the master will be played from a computer there isn't a broadcast standard to comply to. And we might be able to simply playback a true 60p master.
Or would a display like the LG, playing at 60hz, still require a 59.94 signal to operate properly? They're connected through dvi. (Clustered in groups of 4 screens, each receiving a 1080p60 signal).

Thanks in advance for your input! It's quite a challenging project. But the HFR playback looks awesome. Specifically in combination all the animated objects. So smooth! ;)

This sounds like a fascinating (and challenging) project. This is a case where you really, really want to test. Since you know the hardware you're going to use for display, get one 4-screen pod and test it. Then you'll really know what works, and what you have to watch out for in material you take from 24-60/59.9, etc.

That will also uncover any weirdness in the output hardware early in the game.

Just my 2c.

We did a lot of sweat tests for the master format. Originally we intended to deliver in 3 ultrahd 4k (3840x2160) files. But the software isn't able to handle the required synced playback. Since the content moves from 1 video to the other. This is a problem. So in this case the software requires a single video master. The resolution really limits our options. For now H265 works best. This was with full 60p playback.

Another option. That doesn't require software to playback the files. Is for us to deliver 12 x H264 1080p60 files. It would require twelve genlocked brightsign players to send the content to the videowall.
