As someone who just recently purchased a Scarlet, and loved the HFR version of The Hobbit, I felt I had to go out and shoot something in 48fps that wasn't simply "test footage". Two friends and an afternoon later (and a week or so of working on VFX and sound) and this is what popped out.

The YouTube version is 24fps, but you can download a 48fps version from one of the two links below.

I shot it in 3K HD (in 48fps of course) with a 270 degree shutter angle, which seemed to make both the 48 and 24 versions look pretty good, although I will definitely be interested to try 180 (and others) in the future to experiment. Lens used was the Canon 28-135 f/3.5-5.6 USM.

Also, when I shot this video, I did not yet have the side handle or any sort of battery solution, which is why I never get too far away from a power source at my apartment.

I still have much to learn about shooting on RED, so any comments would be much appreciated. Thanks!

That wash great, need to wait to get home to to download the 48fps version can't wait to see that! I'm starting to get the itch to do something in 48fps as well now :001_cool:!

Nick - haha, I'll take it!

Chris - Thanks, man. And go for it! 48fps content is seriously lacking right now outside of The Hobbit, and I, for one, would love to see more of it. The workflow's really not too bad either, other than double the amount of time rendering VFX, and making sure that things like muzzle flashes will actually show up in the 24fps version.

I can not say I li like it, But I always hated field based material or HFR stuff or in tv smoothing etc. I do not understand why anyone can think it looks good but I guess there is people that likes this stuff, not much to say about that. I would personally rater see a film in 18fps instead of 48 if I had to choose.

I actually hate that TV smoothing stuff too, but there was just something about the lack of stuttering motion that sold me on 48 when I saw The Hobbit. And I guess at the same time, at least when it's shot with a sort of inbetween shutter speed, the 24frame version looks nearly the same as it would if it was shot natively, in 24, so there's always that option still left for anyone who doesn't like the smoother look.

Sadly, I didn't really get to take advantage of this, since I was tethered to a power cord at all times, but I'm looking forward to shooting some more out in the open, detailed background, fast pan wide shots in the near future, which is where I feel the higher frame rate makes the most difference.

I have to agree with Bjorn on this one, HFR is not for me either.
