  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

He's Baaaack... with a 90 minute review of Episode II

I don't think youtube bothers to check up on copyright claims I think they just flag incoming videos submitted by some industry guy (most likely a search bot) which finds videos of key phrases and words and submits them to youtube in a complaint.

I'm sure this would classify as fair use because of critic rules or something but that said I still can't stand this guy for any more then maybe 20 seconds.

That shit was hilarious. I wonder how Sith will fair...

I'm gonna have a f***in' epileptic aneurysm!

Probably something to do with Clone Wars cartoons

I don't think he uses a single clone wars clip. I think they just blanket DMCA'ed him for using the term "Clone Wars" in his clip. This is what happens when you literally give college interns the authority to legally represent your company.

The only point I think that he missed was on the lightsabers. He was spot on about them being over-used and impractical, but he also missed the most important character aspect of the lightsaber. The lightsaber is a defensive weapon. The Jedis are peacekeepers and avoid violence whenever possible. The lightsaber allows the Jedi to protect himself while engaging and killing as few people as possible.

The power of a Jedi is that they're so in control they don't have to resort to thuggery and violence to accomplish their means. Obi-Wan in A New Hope manages to disable the tractor beam on the death star without engaging a single person in combat. Han Solo and Luke managed to get into a fight with an entire batallion. That's not just because Obi-wan had a lightsaber it was because of the entire philosophy and character of a Jedi Knight. The lightsaber in the prequels became an offensive weapon.

I think that was a master course in what makes the prequels not work. And I only wish Lucas would be forced to watch the entire thing. Because then just maybe we'd get a watchable Episodes 7-9... But I'm not going to lose sleep hoping for that.

From a different generation, I loved the old movies, and I loved the new one's because I got to see them as they came out. Like the reviews, but I find most of the issues can be brought up with just about any movie made these days.

though I admit that I FF through Jar-Jar scenes and the Padmae and Anakin scenes, (the scene between Anakin and Padmae on the baloney about love blinding him is one of the most painful scenes I have ever seen in my life) aside from that i loved episode three.

to each his own though, I'm certain I would be right there with many of you if I grew up with the originals, but I didn't and I'm kind of glad I can still enjoy the new movies for what they are.

p.s. I blame all issues with the new star wars movies on Rick McCallum(sp),though it's most likely not true.

Watch his Avatar review, it is very funny as well.

I love his reviews, been looking forward to this one, and the best thing is....
:attention9ha:

I saw the Phantom Menace in the movie theatre, not impressed, so Attack of the Clones I bought on DVD... I hated it so much I wish i never bought it.

When the third one came out, I couldn´t be bothered.

I grew up with the original three, and still love all of them, what a let down.

BTW: the first part of the review works now (or he replaced it)

That was amazing. What a fucking genius!

Has anyone found an alternate upload anywhere? I would love to see it!

Hell, I would host the QuickTime if I could contact him.

I found working links on his website redlettermedia.com

Excellent, thanks Eirik!

Haven't even got to it yet because I started watching the Avatar review! Fantastic!

And that's because something is wrong! Storytelling shouldn't be in decadence!

It is unfortunate quality storytelling is in decline these days amongst most of the big budget movies. Though I guess I was tip toeing around the fact that some flaws that he argues are just part of movie making in general and to me more akin to pointing out the guy wearing a watch in a period piece. I know it's a joke review and not serious so at times he makes very nerdy points to poke fun at himself.

I find it funny how a lot of people love his reviews until he reviews a movie they like. I guess that's why I love the Avatar review and my trek fan friend hates his trek reviews... ah the human condition.

That may be the funniest thing I have ever seen!

I love the movies, flaws and all, but this is just funny!

In defending GL, he said from the start that Star Wars was really just an exaggerated old fashion Saturday morning serial, where he just transposed the whacky old west characters into space. It was EVERYONE ELSE who made it a religion and based their lives on it. So plot/shmlot, he can make his movies any way he likes.

I think George would like this review, the same way he embraced Family Guy and Robot Chicken.

EXACTLY!

That said, I really wish Lucas would have made the prequels using old-school effects techniques and similar cameras and film stocks. That would've been cool to still have puppet Yoda, guys in Wookie suits, etc... Perhaps that was just the feeling I had generated based on the The Special Edition updates, which left a bad taste in my mouth. I'm a subscriber to the theory of "if it isn't broke, don't fix it". Greedo shooting first was an epic fail.

Episodes I thru III are what they are now... I truly feel that Lucas did not give his best effort, nor did he surround himself with the right people for the job. The films could have been a LOT better simply by tweaking and cleaning the stories just a bit. The writing was terrible, even in comparison to the original trilogy.

As for the RedLetterMedia reviews, they're all funny.. But his best are still the review of Episode I and the review of Star Trek:TNG. Both should be required viewing in any film-studies or film making course. Especially the segment which compares the opening sequences of Episode I with Episode IV.

I agree completely... while the Episode 2 review was good, his Episode 1 review as seriously master level dissection of narrative structure, character development, and narrative subtext among other things. I felt like I was back in one of my film criticism or screenwriting classes in college. Well my professors were slightly less insane (only slightly).
