  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Here’s how to fit 1,000 terabytes on a DVD

Sounds more like an opportunity for an optical hard drive... that would certainly need an enclosure, but put 5 double sided disks together to make a 10 petabyte hard drive? HDD failure is actually less common then optical disk failure, proper backup just costs more.

if its for storage it can use a caddy. early dvd backups came in caddy form at one point. I'd be happy for them to enclose it and develop a caddy based device. although LTO6 helps a great deal. we need the long term storage problem solved. when a feature can have 50 plus terabytes of data. we need to retain everything in a single location and have clones of it in another location.

Poor Boy's clean room? Air ionizer in a closed off room. In my mind, running one of these for a sufficient amount of time before writing or reading the disk should eliminate most of the dust potential, as the ionizer "ionizes" the dust and draws it to a collector. Besides, if a nano-scale dust particle gets onto the disk, how many 1s or zeros does it cover... and wouldn't a laser burn through it? Just askin.

In my experience, ionizers end up drawing more dust into the space they are meant to "clean". I suppose if you were to completely seal off the room it might help.

Having the disk in a sealed enclosure with the read-laser built into it might be a more realistic method of tackling the contamination issue.

Seems to me a smaller sealed disc makes this feasible. 1/10th the size of a DVD disc and we are still talking 100 terabytes. You could make it the size of a small USB flash drive.

..you mean your film still plays? .. but the data is corrupted.. not much of an archive for lossless storage..

Don't scratch it!... problem solved. '-)

Perspective.
