  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I am testing some different option for higher fps.
Based on the media operation guide, I should be able to set the camera for 5.5k HD at 60 fps and Recode 8:1 with Redmag SSD 240GB. Redcode 9:1 with the 512 mag.
For 5K HD at 60fps, I should be able to have 8:1

Instead I am getting 11:1 at 5.5k HD and 9:1 at 5K HD with the 240GB mag.
What kind of setting is affecting this? Or am I doing something else wrong?

Please help as I have a test shoot tomorrow.

Hey, Alberto.
I'm not a serious pro with RED cameras but I think I can point you in the right direction. First well need your current RED model and firmware version.

Also, I've found this link is very helpful: http://www.red.com/tools/recording-time If you enter in the sensor mag and frame rate it will automatically set your compression.

There's also an iPhone app with the same useful tools: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/redtools/id894739141?mt=8

And this one is a RED OS simulator: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/donna/id938319301?mt=8

I hope this helps you out. Good luck.

Thanks Brandon. I am aware of the tools. They are very helpful.

The problem is that the camera is not setting the proper Redcode compression for the given FPS. It should go to 8:1 at 60FPS instead it gives me 11:1

240GB mini-mag or 1.8" original sized mag?

Standard Mags. Both 240gb and512Gb give me the wrong Recode compared to the specs on the Media Operation Guide.
Rebooted and reinstalled firmware 3 times now....

I am waiting to hear back from RED, but I might have found the reason.
I actually have 256Gb mags. Are they slower than the 240GB?

Update - Just spoke with RED. Apparently it is the new firmwares that are not matching those recode numbers anymore. 240/256 should make no difference.

What camera are you using? Because depending on the brain there are certain bit rate throttles per redmag capacity. Might affect your compression rates as well.

hmm, is this a bug, or a working as intended feature moving forward?!

Have you tried rolloing back an older firmware?

I can't roll back that much. Values on the media guide are based on firmware 5.2.21. I am on 6.2.57...
Based on what I understand from support, maybe it was intended for data integrity, but he was going to check with the other people tomorrow and get back to me.
Either way, as for tomorrow I am stuck with higher Redcode than planned. So I need to decide if I go to 11:1 or drop the resolution.

So how did your shoot go, Alberto? And what was your work around?

No work around. I ended up shooting at higher Redcode. Shoot went well. But some of the stuff at 4.5K has a bit too much noise/compression artifact.
5.5K at 11:1 with a lot of light looks good. But when it goes to less light it is a bit too much compression.

At least the shoot went well.
We'd love to see some footage if you don't mind sharing.:001_smile:

Sorry for the delay, Alberto!
I didn't have thread notifications set for this one.

First off, WOW!
Whatever anxiety you had about compression rates and settings I hope they're gone. That looks spectacular. I especially love the shots at golden hour, the hard light bathing her profile and the drivers side of the vehicle. If I may present one gripe. It's a small thing, something I learned way back in college and always catches my eye (haha). When shooting your subject, I was taught to focus on the eye closest to the lens. In the shot I mention before you're focused on her right eye. In my head it was like square peg, round hole. Just a small thing. Don't get me wrong, your piece, it's beautiful, the sun making her iris literally burst with color. I love it! I thoroughly enjoyed it. My wife came in the room and was like "That's a Dragon sensor, isn't it? God I love that thing!".

Well done indeed, Alberto. Outstanding job. Your client must be thrilled!
