  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Help With Raven Noise Requested

Yeah I have read that from 120fps and on the footage is unusable, because sharpness goes down, noise goes up. If that is true that really sucks. As I was looking for the raven to be my next camera.

Its only unusable if you again under expose slow motion needs light. So bring in as much light as you can and you will be fine. I find that I can crank up to 3200 and I have absolutely no problem with noise.

Sorry you've had this experience. It's a great way to learn though. Never expose to your eye when using Log. Remember, when shooting Raw you can always go back to Log in the color grade, but on set you want to view it in a more standard contrast. The exposure tools, as the others have said, are extremely helpful in avoiding noise and getting proper exposure. Don't blame the camera. You'll be a better DoP for making mistakes like this in the long run. I've screwed up more than I care to admit to and am much better for it. Actually, I'm probably a genius by now...

The noise removal tools in Resolve are pretty damn good, Neat Video is fantastic as well. Best of luck!

first thing first.. most raven users who are just now jumping on the RED train should refer to these handy threads right here. especially if noise is your problem.. BLACKSHADE & Exposing correctly using the red exposure tools is all you really need to fix this problem.. and maybe a couple HMIs.. lol

seriously.. also no joke..

knowing your equipment is your only hope in the battle of noise besides having enough light to expose. At least in my experience learning that is what it is about. All of these newer folks to digital cinema who think its better shooting 100 iso on a DSLR to create low noise pictures but do not realize this is at the expense of shadow detail being lost just completely drives me crazy. Now that you come from DSLR to RED your understanding of how you have been using ISO must be relearned. I suggest looking at the above threads for those new to the RED family of users/owners.

good luck out there.

thanks, what about the sharpness degrade? Is that true at higher framerates? (I know with the GH4 96fps was unusable, so 60fps was it max usable).

Good advice!! ISO is totally different on RED cameras, ISO doesn't change the RAW data! So if you want to expose properly please use traffic lights, false color and all the tools you have at you disposal! ;)

Yeah. I think he knows he messed up. But the damage is done and he needs to salvage his footage.. 99.9 percent bad looking footage is user error. However if the problem already happened then how do you solve? Not by blaming but fixing. It is half of what making a movie is all about. I bet Matt Bass has never made a mistake.. LOL

Remember, Raven is a small cut of the 6k dragon sensor, which means it will be noisier than what you might be used to seeing from 6k footage downsampled. I don't think a little underexposure looks bad on standard olpf dragon at all as long as you don't try and lift it later. That's the key.

I don't know how the OP said he ETTR, that was obviously not the case

Haven't viewed on-camera in anything but Dragon Color...would the parade change with the given color space? If so, RedLogFilm will compress your color and technically he could have been ETTR but on a log image which isn't exactly doing so. That's the only thing I can think of.

That right there

In terms of how to fix:
first gonna need post stabilize,
then use neatvideo ( https://www.neatvideo.com/ ),
color correct the log (use the log tools in davinci, contrast/pivot/etc),
go log to lin, (RLF to desired color space),
LUT it,
then grade it,
and consider adding film grain to hide any "over-smoothing" by the de-noise process,
then export proress 422 proxy for youtube/vimeo
