  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I have Intel i7-4770K 3,5 GHZ, 32GB of RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660, Samsung SSD 840 PRO, Windows 7 64bit, Premiere CC

RAW footage is located on RAID 5 with 3x 2TB IntelliPower 64MB SATA3 WD Red WD20EFRX

I am exporting video clips to desktop SSD or on my RAID disk.

What can I do in hardware or software or workflow to improve and shorten the time of export?

Thanks

first you should choose the right video codecs and containers to work with...

for example:
a - transcode one video in DNxHD codec and Quicktime MOV container to another DNxHD Quicktime MOV

b - transcode one video in DNxHD codec and MXF OP1a container to another DNxHD MXF OP1a

compare the render times and wonder ;-)

(hint: why is native 64bit optimized code faster then the old Quicktime 32bit IP bridge? :-)

MPEG II or the XAVC codecs are also very fast...

second:
check if your CPU has good load during encoding and the file IO isn't blocking your system (Task Manager --> Resource Monitor --> Disk)

What can you do?

1. Use SSD's for fast IO ops
2. Use one source disk and one seperate release disk (never load and save to the same slow HDD or HDD-Raid)
2. Use a fast clocked CPU
3. Use GPU rendering

If you do so - you can transcode 2K DPX to MPEG II High Profile or MXFOP1a with up to 100fps... (or with MXF source and smart rendering even faster)

Clocking the CPU to 4GHz+ would help. A 970GTX or 980GTX would be another way to help with the export time if you are scaling on export often or using FX that are GPU accelerated. Outside of those 2 things it would be going with a 6 Core or 8 Core CPU clocked at 4GHz+ on an X99 with atleast 32GB of ram. 64GB of ram would help if the media is greater than 4K and the timelines complex. If you upgrade to the X99 then the 980Ti would be a better video card to get.
