Hello All!

I am currently in the process of trying to put together a mobile back-up station for when we are out and about with the Epic.

Currently I use an early 2011 Mac Book Pro 15in but only has firewire 800 and its god awful slow at backing-up a full 128gb card! So I am looking at the new 15in and 13in Retina Mac Book Pro as they have dual Thunderbolt.

I then managed to find this -
http://store.apple.com/uk/product/H8875ZM/A/lacie-esata-hub-thunderbolt-series

The Red station has an e-sata port on it and I was thinking of running the RED Station through this LaCie hub and into the first thunderbolt port on the Mac, then out to a USB 3 or thunberbolt drive depending on what we have at the time. But was unsure if something like this would work?

Also any feedback on going for the 13in or 15in retina Mac Books would be nice, as I would do proxies when I get back off the shoot on our desktop so I dont really think raw power is really needed, but can both of these play back at 1/8th? I would then try and fashion this into a small pelican case with some power for the LaCie hub.

Thanks for any Help!

Jonny

I don't know that you'd be able to daisy chain like that. Maybe you can? But you can get a USB3.0 RedMag reader.

I make most of my income as a DIT. I routinely do 1 or 2 camera shoots, on Red, using my early-2013 15" MBP, a USB3.0 RedMag reader, and typically USB3.0 harddrives provided by production. I have a small USB3.0 1x4 hub that I keep with me, and usually put the destination drives on that, and the RedMag reader on the other main USB3.0 port on the laptop. Thanks to the now-GPU accelerated RCX, I can MD5 checksum (ShotPut Pro or DataDouble) and make a set of transcodes (if needed) without really much of a problem. Only problem comes if there's a two-camera interview finishing the day and "This will be quick" turns into "We rolled for 50 minutes straight and now we're wrapped."

That looks awesome. Just ordered the USB3 Mag Reader.

Is the upgrade process quite easy? Is it just a simple in and out with the HDD and the SSD? As I wouldnt want to ruin a £250 drive !
