I am transcoding footage shot in a club. The ProRes footage
shows very strange red color pattern, so does a test in Uncomp. 8 bit.

What makes the entire thing very strange is that I cannot reproduce it.
It sometimes shows in Redcine-X - sometimes it does not.

I did a quick transfer via Apple color, that seems to work so far but I have to do
more clips to be sure.
Also doing a test transfer via After Effects CS5 right now.

Settings:

Footage:

Shot at 60fps, 3k, Redcode 36
Timebase at 23.98
Shutter 60th (we were lacking light...)

Redcine-X 470
Redrocket, latest firmware

Anybody has any idea what is going on ?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Axel

Tiff export from Redcine-X, strangely enough this is inconsistent - sometimes redcine-x shows the pattern, sometimes it doesn't...

Looks like corrupt data. Usually caused by bad media, readers, cables, etc..

If it doesn't always happen to the same clip in the same place, I would start checking cables or even suspecting intermittent hard drive errors or the beginning of a failure.

seems a too sexy girls corrupt data error, current technology can not do anything to fix it. Sorry.

:-) Excuse me, I´m with Jeff and bet for the reader.

Thanks for your quick reply guys.

Corrupt data does not make any sense to me.

Files were transferred without a glitch via R3D manager. Although
this is not 100% guarantee the software usually whines around
when several clips are that corrupted.

The red pattern is limited to just one scene inside the club.
Everything before and after, on the same card, looks just fine.

I just managed to do a clean transcode via Apple Color.
That, in my humble opinion, speaks against the corrupted files.
If the ones and zeroes are out of whack, they should be out of whack for
good.

And not just transfer fine with a different (painfully slower) method.

There are quite a few clips that show this pattern by the way. Over several minutes.

Cheers

Axel

same here,
can happen on any clip, any system, any cable, with different sources but no issue when Redrocket is off,
very strange !
This a BT Redrocket and my first use of it.
All shots rendered to prores with recineX are perfect if the card is OFF but it takes
20/30 times the time of the clip, i think I better send the redrocket back to RED but if anyone had this issue and fixed it, i would love to understand the cause.

I may have missed it but have you tried turning off the Rocket card in RCX and exporting out in RCX.
Reduce your debayer to 1/8 for speed.
this is just a way to rule out the REDRocket card.

Best of luck.

I'm going to GUESS it's the debayer being applied in the transcode. I wonder if there was some weird wavelength of light going on that interfered with the red pixels and was interpolated out by Color cause it was a higher quality debayer? I'm guesstimating!

Did you restart the machine after the error? We have experienced this before. All clips look fine, you play thru a corrupted clip and then when you go back to the good clips they look bad as well.

Also, if you play around with all the debayer settings you will find that one of them MIGHT give you a good image, gone thru that as well...

Exact same thing here. Red Rocket off - works like a charm.

That is my suspicion

Hey Frank,

Did you ever get a fix for that problem ?
Just scaling down the debayer and having the quality
go down the drain does not really sound like a very satisfying solution to me...

cheers

Ok - here is the scoop: Thanks to some stellar support from my man Jonathan Bennett at Red I might have cornered the problem: Esata card.
If I transfer directly from system hard drive or from an internal raid everything looks good.

I am using a SeriTek2ME4 by the way. Will install an Atto680 tomorrow and see if that solves it.

I will be monitoring the situation but so far my troubles seem to be solved.
Are you in touch with the red support guys ?

Yes, of course, since 2 weeks, they propose that I send the the card for evaluation but I have to work and sometimes the card does work.
But I am in France and you cannot imagine what it is to deal with fedex for a temporary export, even with proper paperwork they sometimes force you to pay import taxes twice, that happened with the RED body.
They make mistakes but you pay and then you can loose more time to reclaim the indue payment.
So as long as it not mandatory to send things to usa, I try to avoid it.
I am happy for you if you do not have any trouble any more.
The card I use is a Lycom PCIe SATAII
4 eSATA External Ports

late but the same issue

late but the same issue

hey all. I'm a year and a half late to this party, but the issue described is exactly what I have here:(I've attached a jpg) I have about 15 files that are corrupted like this. interestingly, when you change parameters in RedCine X Pro, such as ASA, exposure, ect, the corruption will dissapear on a given frame - suggesting that it's NOT baked into the R3D file frame for frame.
But - I have tried everything discussed here, rendering without the Red Rocket card, with it, changing the Debayer settings a few times. But the corruption is there every time.

If anyone since this thread posted has any new info, I would greatly appreciate it.

thanks,
