Help! Removing PL Mount

Thom,

I believe the original allen hex head screws used a 2mm wrench. Best check on this though.
And there was some talk about the wrenches that came with these weren't to good.
I recommend using an Allen Plus type as I mentioned above.

Great, thanks for the quick response!

Ordered two!

From one of my previous posts:

"Yup, based on customer feedback, we are making a running change to Torx Plus screws for our mounts. We are getting some extra Torx Plus screws for the mounts (both PL and NIKON) at RED so we can send along to anyone who needs them. We will also try to include the key you need to install them. Give us a little time to get that ready and we'll start sending them out to those who request them.

Please feel free to PM me if you'd like to be added to the list to receive these and indicate your mount type and ship-to address.

Thanks, BC"

Good on you Brent. Now just do away with flat heads and use some proper pan or cheese heads and all will be right. lol

I was using the hex key that came with the Red and with the Nikon mount. They didn't grip the screws. I noticed they where showing wear after failing so I kept using new ones each time I tried. All failed on three screws. So, I went out and bought some high end hex drivers one very good quality with a hex ball head. This one griped the screws alright but it snapped when I put the pressure on. I'm sure there is a tool out there that would remove those screws but I haven't found it. Camera is heading back to Red.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I regret that I didn't end up with a solution worth sharing.

Red service is great.

What snapped the wrench or the screw? Those ball heads are intended for hard to get to screw angles. They do not provide much surface contact to the hex head of the screw. Best to use a full contact wrench. This probally does not matter now as RED will replace the screws with Torx Plus ones. Make sure they send you a wrench as they are sometimes hard to locate.

good luck,

The ball head driver snapped. The full contact hex keys slipped - both L type and drivers. Torx Plus ( I didn't know what they were called until today ) are common enough in European cars.

Ahhh... crap.

Just got my RED back from service.... the hexs have been swapped for Torx pluses, which is nice.

One minor problem though, no one thought to tell me, and nobody included a Torx Driver/key.

Anyone know where to get a Torx Plus driver from a local store? I have a shoot tomorrow which I need to use my Nikon mount with.

Failing that any one in DC/MD have a torx plus driver I can borrow tomorrow morning?

Edit:
I've just read that a standard torx T-10 will work with a torx plus screw.. anyone tried it?

Ed, I'm not sure how I feel about putting a standard torx driver into a torx plus screw... it will probably work, but not without at least a little damage to the screw head. Give Grainger (www.grainger.com) a try, they have a number of branches in the Baltimore/Washington area. You do need to set up an account with them to purchase, so be prepared for that. I'd lend you one, but I've just ordered them online today.

Edit:
I couldn't find any on the Grainger website, try calling Skarie at 8:30am, (410) 728-6000. They're in Baltimore and mostly sell larger wood shop equipment, but they might have them or know who would.

That's true about using regular Torx wrenches on Torx Plus but not the other way around.
