  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

As much as I love my RED One, I do get really frustated at all the button pushing I need to do in order to get to the same few permutations of menu settings that I use over and over again!

For instance, I am happily working away at 4k, 16/9, 25fps, 1/60th and then I see something to pick up on at 100fps, so......

Change 4k 16/9 to 2k 16/9 on the system menu, exit. Change shutter to 1/120th on the sensor menu (or the shortcut button). Enable varispeed on the senser menu, finally get to the rate setting and turn the knob endlessly, waiting for the indicator to go up to 100fps, exit. At this stage pre-read is not an option - I simply don't have the time.

Unfortunately most wild subjects move away in realtime! Seriously though, I miss a lot of shots because of this problem.

Couldn't RED enable the remapping of some buttons to allow (say three in my case) exact combinations of menu settings that are worked with regularly, rather than just direct access buttons as they are at present?

Apologies if this has been discussed before, or if I have missed something obvious!

Hi Geoff,

That does sound like it might be possible, and useful for some people.

But in the mean time, you could always make things a little easier by setting your shutter mode to 'relative', which would cut out the need to change your shutter speed - it will change as you adjust your fps.

And eventually with the Epic we'll be able to shoot at a high fps without adjusting the resolution.

Hi Piers,

Thanks for the suggestion, which does remove some button pushing!

I'm certainly looking forward to Epic for the s/m and lots of other reasons, not least of which are lower standby power and boot time. Theses are two other features on the RED which constantly cause problems for me.

To work for a hide (blind) to film shy species requires the use of car batteries just to keep the RED ready to roll for a few hours.

Using the ABC shortcut buttons on the back should also help reduce the amount of menu threading. To set them go to the menu you want to set the shortcut to and push and hold either ABC and release when the camera says the shortcut is set. I don't think you're going to be able to get any faster than that. There would need to be a rather huge/difficult menu architecture change to make it faster than that.

Thanks Adam, this also speeds things up. I hadn't realised that you could go to menu and sub-menu positions with those keys. I thought that the same functions were available as for the side and viewfinder key mapping.

It all helps, but a set of one-touch buttons to alter the whole camera set up would be much better.

I wondered if a simple programme could be introduced via the SD Flash card which effected the equivalent of a rapid button pushing proceedure or something? I'm sure that, however slow it was, it would be a lot fasted than me!!
