Can someone look at their RED One's RED Drive AC/DC power supply and tell me the polarity of the center pin? I had to buy a universal (switchable) power supply and don't know if the center should be positive or negative.

Also, specs are 12V 1.5A, correct?

Thanks,
Skip

On my Red One RED DRIVE mains power supply, the label says centre pin positive. 12V dc, 1.5A.

Your power supply should also be a regulated one to ensure a stable output voltage.

You don't need a power supply for your RED drive if you are using Firewire. It draws all the power it needs from the cable.

Through three feature films, we've never once used those power supplies, and never once had a problem.

I would advise not to bus power your Red Drives as the most common fault found on Red Drives is a burnt out Firewire connector.

The voltage from a computer's firewire can be varied and unregulated.

I would advise not risk your day's work in such a way by a bad practice.

Such is the risk that one of my data wranglers has a special mod firewire cable that doesn't have bus power wiring to protect the Red Drive.

+1

RED even told us to not bus-power via firewire. After the fact, of course, but yeah… The last couple RED-RAMs I bought (same design, just SSDs inside) had a little pink or yellow slip of paper in the package saying as much. Always power with the included power supply.

In a pinch, Radio Shack has what you need as well. But you'll spend $50~$60 picking it up by the time you get the proper adapter and plug end to fit the drive. Digikey is a much better solution or buy new ones from RED. I don't think RED still sells any to fit the older RED Drive and RED RAM.
