Has anyone used both the Summicrons and the Summiluxs? Do they have the same look? Is the main difference just the speed, weight and build?

Thanks

Haven't tested out the entire set against each other, but the 50mm which I did for a HDR project, the Summicron is sharper, and so where two other locals, so I think that the Summicron is safe to say they are sharper.

Look wise, they where identical at T4, speed which we shot the tests at, but I know for fact that their internal glass elements are different glass, and so is the coating process on the them, but then I also am pretty sure that the Leica Coating and final look is giving at Leica factory, so they must be equally color matched across the entire sets.

Should... :)

Thanks Ketch... I really like the Leica look... was reviewing footage from a test done on Friday.... unfortunately the Leicas tested were the Summiluxes... I almost preferred the look to the Masters.... were the Summicrons sharp wide open?

It seems the Summicrons are not the most popular lenses.... anyone with any experience with them please chine in.

Hi Greg ... thanks for chiming in... are the lenses sharp wide open and do they look similar to the summiluxes?

Someone needs to be specific. I found the E60 50mm R to be sharper and better FOR MY NEEDS than even the awesome 0.95.
The 80 lux is awesome also. It's not easy to say their main difference is this or that. I found that each Leica lens has a very unique personality you need to learn. Any Leica lens is a true Lens!
All mix great together, from the cheapest to the most expensive. Nothing that I can't fix easy in post. Leica coatings are better every year so expect a newer production lens to have a better pic but not to the degree that can't be matched.
I work only with Leicas R and M with some rare other lenses that I like as well.

to the best of my knowledge the summicrons and the summiluxes are completely different designs and coatings from the photography lines

I love the summicron-c! Here are some shots mostly wide open.

*this one has a lot of background detail but needs a better colorist than me to do their magic.

Nice one Chad.... love the pics... the Summicrons are truly tac sharp with a lot of character.... beginning to prefer them to the Master-primes.

here is a good article

ive used the summilux, they were sharp wide open and looked beautiful, but very clinical too if that makes sense. we did have a couple of focal lengths in summicron and we mixed and matched them in setups and i could not see any difference in look on set or in post or in the final. if im shooting phantom or need the stop, i do order these before the master primes now. though if im shooting lifestyle or a lot of faces i still go for the cooke s4s whenever possible. the leicas seem a little flat for me, though i have no idea why.

Thanks Jordan..... it is nice to hear the only difference is the speed.... they also look like they will be great for gimbal work

That's no surprise! The Noctilux is not what I would call a sharp lens, although it's sharp enough for normal print sizes. I am baffled by the obsession with very wide apertures, but that's just me.

The reason the cooke s4s have more depth is because they deliberately design them in such a way to pop the center more. The Leicas are more normal.

That article states: "The unique thing about the Leica Cine lenses is that they are made by Leica, compact and not that expensive compared to what movie primes usually cost. "

If the few Summilux's cost 260k = 520k for 3D then I really like to know which ones are the expensive ones? Does anyone knows (other than zooms)?
