I would appreciate any help. I am trying to upgrade my Scarlet to the newest firmware upgrade 3.0

I am confused with the directions that come with the firmware upgrade. It says:
2. Using RED STATION REDMAG 1.8", copy the "force_upgrade" folder and it's contents to the top level of the REDMAG® 1.8" SSD directory.

I have a formatted Redmag 64 gig SSD card inserted in the Remag Station. When I try and drag the 'force upgrade' folder to the drive it rejects it.

How do I copy to top level of the Redmag directory?

Thank you Jeff! I appreciate your help. Another question if you don't mind- I'm a little nervous about doing this upgrade as it's my first time to do it.

When I drag the folder to the RedMag drive it places it alonside the RDM and digital_magazine.bin zip files. Is this correct?

How do I know if it's placing the 'force upgrade folder in the TOP LEVEL/

I too am trying to upgrade but it seems that my brand new REDStation doesn't work. I'm on a PC i7 and I only get acknowledgement of the mag in System Devices (as a mass storage device). I can't access it other than generic properties. Tried connecting with USB and eSATA cables -same result. I don't have a mag that is formatted yet but another poster showed how it could be done on your computer using windows. Is there something I'm missing or is my REDStation a dud out of the box? Any help would be appreciated as support hasn't got back to me.

The top level of your drive is exactly that - what you see when you open your drive icon. I'm on a PC, but folders are folders :)

You'll simply have a folder sitting on the root of your drive that's say 'force_upgrade'. That's it. Don't worry about contents inside it.

Just drag the 'force_upgrade' folder onto your SSD and leave the other data there (it's part of the format you did on the SS).

What this does is simple, when your Scarlet boots with an SSD inside, the 'force upgrade' folder is the first thing it sees and it then executes the .bin file inside - triggering the upgrade.

The Redsattion isn't a 'hub' in the sense of a standard device. It's more like a caddy for a HDD (like you get hold of to run laptop drives externally etc). Without an SSD inside, it has nothing to report.

If your system sees the hub - that's fine. One a formatted SSD is placed in it (before turning it on!), you'll then be able to access the data on the SSD (or write to it for force upgrades etc).

Thanks Andy for your detailed response. I really appreciate the explanation.

I have read on Red Scarlet that some people have had major issues with the 3.0 upgrade... Have you or anyone else had any problems?

Peter does this automatically install it in the TOP LEVEL of the drives directory?

Do I erase the RDM folder and .bin files or leave them there?

As Andy have said above - just leave everything there as it is. If You do have some clips there that you want to keep - back those up, as You will need to reformat all SSD's once the camera is upgrade in order to use them...
And yes - dragging the folder onto the icon of the SSD will put it into the TOP LEVEL (aka "root directory", aka "/") - which is where the camera expects it...

Small note - the upgrade is really fast (I think like 10 sec) and the camera shuts down after that. Don't freak out (as I did). Take the SSD out, boot the camera and check that it is on 3.0.0 - then re-insert the SSD's and reformat them all...

So far 3.0.0 have been good to me and I love the new color science and the monitoring path...

Peter

To be honest - I haven't checked that yet. It's 3:34AM here in Japan and if I fire up the camera now - my wife will throw us both (me and the camera) out in the rain... ;o)
Unless someone else chimes in I will check it tomorrow...

Edit: Jeff "chimed in" ;o)

Hi Jim - I'm on Epic - but principles on updates etc are the same, so i just wanted to clarify for you Graham (and anyone else reading :)

Peter doesn't look to be having problems... bear in mind that there'll be a higher ratio of people who upgrade and all is OK (so they don't post).

If you are concerned, do an upgrade to 2.5 or 2.8 to get used to the process (then move to 3.0 when you're happy). Getting experience and comfort is important - just play around with the menus and you'll soon be wondering why you were concerned.

Make sure you format the RED SSD on the camera and not in Disk Utility (MAC) or Disk Management snap-in (Windows). Then EJECT SSD from either the menu on the touchscreen or any myriad of shortcut keys. Plug into the RedStation and mount into the filesystem (if automount is disabled on your computer). Then simply take the entire force_updrade folder and copy and paste it or CTRL+drag (MAC) onto the SSD mounted volume in either My Computer (Win) or Finder (MAC), once you are done theforce-upgrade folder should be at the root directory of the SSD.

Again I appreciate all the great information- kind of sucks though that this upgrade does not support audio PLAYBACK. Just had a shoot yesterday and ended up running an HVX200 camera for backup audio in case the audio I was monitoring on the Scarlet had any issues. I wasn't able to confirm that I had good audio until after the shoot when I started up RCX. Thankfully the audio was fine.
