  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Since DSMC2 I’ve been quite happy with 7:1 the majority of the time.

8k 13:1 is about the same data rate as 6k 7:1 was

8:1-10:1 is my comfort zone.

However, it really depends on the content of the shot, the ISO you chose to rate the sensor, and the final delivery resolution.

I've had success with a talking head against a black background (Charlie Rose style) project that was shot 16:1 and delivered in 1080p. It was lit to ISO 320 (old calibration of 640) to keep the noise level at a minimum. Looking at it again, I think it would have been suitable for 4K delivery as well.

The higher the ISO, the less compression I'm willing to live with. And if I have to do any 7K or 6K, I'll definitely lower the compression ratio as well.

Of course, the answer you don't want to hear is "Do your own testing." :)
 
I use 8:1 in a stage or a location, when the day is running smooth. I bump up to 12:1 when on location with limited power, and need that extra time on a mag. I only use these ratios because I do lo budge shows and mostly do my own DIT. At 12:1 I also have never seen any problems in the image.
 
I do 10:1 at day, 6:1/7:1 at night.
Only change this on scenes that demand a lower redcode. No one complained so far with this. But there are some clients that demand the best compression possible, so sometimes is 6:1 all the time.
In my testings, up to 8k 14:1, if the scene is properly lit, no one would be able to tell the difference. But do your own testing to see what your limit is.
