  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Helium 8K has the silky texture of A65

It seems that if you use a lower ISO with all RED sensors, that's the result you're going to get. RED sensors have very clean output.

Lessons learned the hard way. My last project was exposed at 800 ISO (because that's the native ISO for Scarlet-W, right?) and the client was very shocked to see the "noisy" blacks, even though I did my blackshading properly.. They don't want ANY grain or texture on the blacks! So, me thinks me should've exposed at 320 ISO instead..

Thanks God all of the "noise" are gone with Neat Video plugin and the client is happy again :)

same thing happened to me. i just always keep the iso as low as possible now.

AFAIK, REDCODE does not do anything to the data off the sensor, apart from compressing it. So that data is as RAW as you're going to get. In the same way that you should add contrast to the image, you should apply at least some chrominance NR to it as well. It's like picking your own carrots and washing them before you eat them. ;-)

On Dragon, I usually expose for ISO 320 on STH and 500 on LLO. That gives me a little bit of room to lift in post, if needed and not be too noisy.

If you get extreme and just expose for ISO 250 at all times, your highlights might clip early because of all of the light required to make midtones look bright enough at 250. It just depends on the DR of your scene.

If you're using Helium's new ISO calibration it cuts all the ISO numbers in half, in a sense. So 250 is what 500 was, and I'm finding helium at its new 250 is that squeaky clean look with STH.

I so far haven't seen any clipping issues, it shoots a lot like dragon in the original epic body.

Well said. Not everyone's gonna want to wash their own carrots. Maybe they can't afford the time. But for those who do they'll get just the taste they want and expect. :)

Red looks great at low ISOs. And good at high ISOs with some Neat Video. Not everyone can afford to spend that time, on set to get enough light or in post to clean up shadows. But for those who do it will pay off.

Noticing this too, even at 320 on the new calibration. It's feeling really fantastic in that sense.

why is this post in the "shot on red" section and not in "red discussion" one???? i don't see any footage shot on red or any other cameras in here................

I actually took the image down Rohan, but here it is again (I wasn't happy with the colour balance)

The post process for this image is ACES 16bit linear -> ACEScc -> Grade -> ARRIWideGamut/LogC -> ARRI rec709 K1S1 LUT. Which, once I saw the Helium with ARRI processing, it reminds me of the A65 from when I data wrangled a shoot using those cameras.
