  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

HEDGE - DATA TRANSFER SOFTWARE - GROUP BUY

+1
Im in for a personal license.
Thanks for this group buy.
I have been using Shotput pro but there are some things Im not so happy with there.

EDIT: Ok just downloaded and purchased and used.... This is so much a more familiar UI than ShotPut ever will be. Still trying to figure out the log generations and where to view them.
Thank you for this GB

So I have a quick question.
I want to transfer separate groups of clips to different folders on my destination drive from my RED Mag. How do I grab say 20 or so clips from the mag and then transfer them. I don't seem to be able to highlight a bunch of clips and then transfer them to the destination drive folder. I need to select the complete folder with every clip in it and then separate them out later...
Thanks enjoying the product just need to figure out how to separate out different clips or files to different folders with out having to do them one at a time.

The transfer speeds are great, but the program does too much automatic stuff. For the love of Pete, give me more control over my transfers. Stop automatically starting transfers when I try to add more stuff to offload while I have other transfers going. This could be a great piece of software if they could fix their interface. They try to save the DIT some steps by automatically starting transfers, but in reality it causes more work moving files to their proper folders and leaves me feeling with a lack of control.

I'll still use the product when production has a low budget with not enough media cards, so fast offloads become a priority. But until they fix their UI paradigm I'll still use Shotput Pro when I need full control of my offloads. I'll switch over fully once they improve their interface

I don't think what you're experiencing is typical. I've used Hedge for a few months now and it has never started a transfer automatically for me.

It would be great to learn what I'm doing wrong. Here is the scenario that I am encountering that is giving me grey hair:

1. I queue up several media cards to offload. I am able to choose separate destination and source folders/drives for each of these transfers.
2. I hit the start transfer button. These transfers start going.
3. After one of the transfers completes, but others are still going, I then go to queue up an additional source to transfer from.
4. This additional transfer automatically starts running immediately to whatever is currently in the destination column.
5. I change the destination folders/drives and this automatically starts up additional transfers.

Maybe I need to clear the source and destination columns before trying to queue something else up. I'll have to go back and check the program to see if this is possible. Regardless, I find it frustrating to use, but maybe I just need to train myself better on how the product works. Any suggestions?

Love that one personal license works with all your macs. I keep buying copies of shotput to keep up with the number of systems and it's getting old. Keeping track of which licenses are registered to which systems with imagineproducts new sign in method is a headache!

You can't do that right now, but we are working on it. Hedge was built with transfering _complete_ drives in mind, not subsets of files and folders. Multiselect of folders is on it's way, file sets need more work.

You hit the nail on it's head Jason! We built Hedge exactly for those type of productions :)

The pain we ourselves had when doing multicam productions was card turnaround time. So speed was the biggest hurdle. Lots of time left for organization after the import. That's why Hedge focused on "transfer first, organize later".

We hear you though. DITs of course need more control, but most of the time that results in what we call Space Shuttle Software. Lots of settings, knobs, checkboxes. We've been putting a lot of effort into a new Hedge interface which focuses on workflow and organization. At NAB we had a working prototype interface that we wargamed with a lot of DITs. If you're coming to IBC maybe you can have a go at it and give us some feedback?

Yes, you're running into the limitations of what Hedge can do right now. You need queuing, which is on the todo, and as Hedge copies everything to everything I think you also need nodes. Step 5 is a bit of technical debt that we're tackling right now. Hedge is just over a year old now, and we do very frequent major updates about every 2-3 months so I'd suggest leaning back a bit and wait until Hedge does what you need. It might surprise you how fast we develop compared to normal update cycles.

Paul thank you for the answer. Thats fine for me right now and I will look forward to when I can break out different files from a folder and send them to different drives.
I love the UI in fact I have given Hedge info to our location post department and they are running some test right now so maybe they will adopt it soon.
We transfer probably over 100 XDcam disc, and many other sources of camera data a day so we will know if this thing works or not pretty fast.
Ill keep looking for the updates on more functionality for different needs.

Good to know you guys are working on the interface. With the speed gains over Shotput Pro, you guys could easily become the defacto standard for DIT's.

Maybe have two ways of using the program: Easy-mode and Advanced-mode. I have friends that love the drag and drop ease with which your program works, but there are times when more options are necessary.

As it stands, I use your program during the day when I am awake and can work around the limitations, but then use Shotput Pro at night, so I can just set it and forget it and wake up in the morning with everything where it should be.

50% reached, thanks for the support everyone! The group buy runs for three more weeks, up to the first of August. For those that bought it already, the added discount has been refunded!

Jason, can you send me your email by DM? Maybe we can run you through our Workflow prototype with a remote session.
