Worked it out! its not a pretty system but it works and you can monitor the camera audio and h4n recording through the splitter which is handy

I have searched the user manual and the menus but can't figure out how to adjust the headphone output volume on my Scarlet-X. Can someone please tell me how this is done? Thanks.

It's in the SYSTEM / AUDIO OUT menu. Slide the output level control for Ch 1 and Ch 2 up to about -9dB.

Thanks, Stuart. I thought this was the right place. I even had it all the way up to -1 (max), and the director, sound guy, and myself felt it was still too low for monitoring. What else could we be doing wrong here? I usually like to monitor the audio at quite a high volume to drown out everything else. Audio levels seemed to be reading high enough on the audio meter, that is to say, about the middle of the bar. Input set to 10 dB. Thanks.

As I test it in front of me right now, I can definitely hear at -1, but i would never want to go lower than that. And would rather go higher if possible.

are you getting a read on your scarlet by doing this method...as in audio bars/waveform on your touch screen?
and are you getting a audio in your timeline when your import your r3d files?

which software can you see it in?
premiere? fcp? redcinex?

sorry for the questions, i did this method and had no luck with audio in my timeline ;(

Are you sure your input signal is high enough? Maybe it's not the headphone output at fault?

Thanks for the questions/suggestions guys. Audio input is high enough. It reads properly on the audio meters on the monitor. We hear the audio during playback in Redcine Pro. Haven't tried timeline yet. I use CS5.5.

Just to clarify, I do hear the audio well enough I suppose to be confident in using it during a shoot, but would appreciate being able to crank the volume up another 50-100%.
