We are renting an Epic which is set up with the Epic Quick Release for 19mm. Planning to use our MB20, which is set up for Studio 15mm, I purchased two DSMC Universal Mount Adapters, 15mm, to bolt to the Quick Release. All good except:

The DSMC Universal Mount Adapters center the rods on lens axis instead of offsetting them. This is a real head scratcher, since there isn't a 15mm studio configuration that is centered. Fortunately the Epic we are renting comes with a Redrock matte box that will work on the 19mm rods.

What is the purpose of the adapters exactly? Did I miss something? Red does sell a separate 15mm lightweight adapter, but you wouldn't need the 15mm studio adapters for that.

My rep said that Red will soon have a version with the proper studio offset. I'm also puzzled by the current version.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it is actually the Dovetail Quick Release Platform that will have to change, not the 15mm Universal Mounts. Looking at our platform there doesn't appear to be clearance for offset rods to pass through.

We noticed the same thing when trying to make the 15mm adapter work. If the holes are properly offset, they would bang into the Quick Release Platform. I suppose this means for our Epic X, we will look to one of the risers out there that are set up for 15mm studio, unless Red has something up their sleeve. I did like the idea of the Quick Release though.

I suspect RED has a 15mm Studio platform up their sleeves somewhere.

Easiest thing to do would be to release another Riser plate with the mounting screws off-center, I think

Yes, new holes in the Epic Mounting Plate. Theoretically, an end user could just have the holes drilled at a machine shop, 17.25mm to the left of the existing holes. But the design of the mounting plate includes a thick wedge underneath for the screws, which would prevent just drilling the holes.

The demo video on the Quick Release System posted in the online store shows how the 15mm studio adapter goes on the front of the Quick Release. In its present configuration, it just doesn't work. Anybody at Red in on this thread? I would love to use the Quick Release System with my 15mm studio setup, but I need an Epic Mounting Plate with offset holes. Are there any plans to accommodate this?

Add another one to the dept.....i'm rendered useless with the system as well and back to using my ET setup....it's not quick release, but when i need a mattbox and FF.....it's my only option....seems it may have been a mistake by RED? but it's useless w/out off centered holes.....too bad....great idea though.

I just sent my 15mm adapters back for a refund. There is no use for them in the current configuration. I'm thinking about moving to 19mm, although it will cost some money to get the adapters I need.

It is very odd. I've always thought 15mm studio was just an after thought for red from the beginning. Like they thought everyone should move to 19mm.

I plan on using as much 15mm lightweight as possible however.

It's not odd, it's just that not all the bits and pieces are available yet. Look at the Hybrid system from Element Technica as an example. Their 15mm mounts are centered on the baseplate as well. You get the offset by bolting the plate to the camera using the offset mount holes (you move the bolts over). With the RED QR system it works much the same way. The mounts are centered on the baseplate, what we're waiting for is a different mounting plate for the EPIC -- the $100 plate that bolts onto the bottom of the camera and locks into the Quick Release base. They had the centered mounting plate for a while, they just released the centered plate that is a bit thicker and takes universal mounts on the front for keeping rods attached to the camera. Soon we should have a plate that offsets by 17.5mm so the rods are in proper position for 15mm studio offset configuration.

Agreed Jeff. The difficulty from my end is obtaining confirmation that the new plate is coming at all, and if so, when. I've asked my bomb rep these questions to no avail (not his fault - there are apparently no answers right now). In the next few weeks, my shooting schedule necessitates making decisions.

From Red's point of view, after spending a few years reading Reduser, I understand why Red reserves the right to remain quiet about what components are in the pipeline, expected release dates, etc. The level of unrealistic expectations and resulting rudeness on the part of a very few users with respect to availability, etc. has clogged the communications channel, making the guys at Red less willing to offer timelines. Who can blame them?

From my point of view as a user, it makes for difficult planning. Since I'm already set up for 15mm studio, and I want to use the Quick Release system, the 15mm adapters were an obvious choice. Since they don't work in the current configuration, and there are no answers about if and when they might work, I'm left with a fallback plan involving additional cost (converting to 19mm), or one which doesn't involve Quick Release.

This situation is not exclusive to Red as a company. It just is what it is.

Well put, Timothy. I think most of us are not asking for dates or prices, rather we are just hoping to find out what the plan is...
