Hi,

I am looking into procuring a JVC DT-V20L1U for my on location monitoring needs. I am obviously looking at something 'way better' than a HDMI monitor.

How does this compare with the Panasonic BT-LH1710?

Thanks for your opinions and time.

I have the 24" version in my edit suite and love it, however, the color shifts when off-axis.

The Panasonic is VERY nice.

That's funny that you say that about the JVC but not the Panasonic. I have a 17" JVC which I absolutely love (except it bright bright sunlight as it's got a glossy screen). Recently, on a two RED shoot the company that hired me brought along their 17" Panasonic (I think an older 17" HDSDI model). When I walked into the room where they had both monitors set up to each other I almost freaked out at the coloring on one of the cameras because I was at a very far side angle. The Panasonic had this horrible horrible red tint that the JVC just didn't have. When I compared the two, it looked like the JVC had it's colors go less wonky and more just dark. Now, top to bottom is a little different story. Both went weird with the colors, but the JVC was far closer to being accurate. Of course, as I said, I believe this was an older Panasonic 17".

IMO, one of the best 17" and larger HD-SDI monitors out there are the Flanders Scientific:

Hi,
I think I've never heard about these monitors (the Flanders Scientific).
The price seems quite ok, and they offer interesting options. Has anybody been able to compare these to the Panasonic and JVCs ?

I've had a similar setup on a recent shoot, a JVC 24" and a Panasonic 17" on the same shoot, except it was the most recent Panasonic model (the 1760 I think).

I have to say, before that, I really didn't like the Panasonic monitor, but this time I was quite impressed by how well it performed compared to the JVC...

I never got to do a side by side comparison between the older 17" and the newer, but I have a feeling they have really been improved since the first generations...

The dark tones look a bit strange on the JVC, in my opinion, and the viewing angle is pretty bad. But still, not too bad considering their price. Just don't use it for grading...

We got 2 JVC one DT-V17L3D & one DT-V17L2D, the 2009 and 2008 models respectively, final letters could change between US and EU.
We use them on every shooting and both are strong and useful on the field, the 17" accept a V-mount plate on the back and a RED brick could last almost a full day.
On every commercial I shoot with REDone I presented the JVC side by side with a Panasonic 17" (I don't remember the code but could be 2/3 years old) or with a Sony 24" and I never found a DoP or a director that choose them and not the JVC.
All this before saying that JVC price is 30% less than Pana and almost half of the Sony.
IMHO JVC has the quality/price relation in HD-SDI field monitors and I saw better absolute quality only with Astro's monitors, not the cheapest in the market.

Thanks for all your inputs, guys. But I guess the jury is still out. Hopefully a couple more pitches will help me decide either way.
